SONNY ROLLINS - VOLUME 2

A VG+ copy of this very early and scarce 1957 US jazz classic on the coveted BLUE NOTE label, MONO, BLP 1558

 Matrix Numbers :

  Side 1  BN-LP-1558-A-2  with "RVG" and the "ear" (inverted "P" from "Plastylite") "9 M" (side 1 only) etched into the run-off grooves   

Side 2  BN-LP-1558-B-2  with "RVG" and the dog ear hand etched into the run-off grooves

The condition of the vinyl is VG+. A nice shine and sheen throughout with just a few very wispy hairlines on each side, only really visible when held in a bright light. The exception to this is a little surface scuffing on the final track of side 2 - just 1-2cm and surface only, not affecting playback. This 1950's Blue Note vinyl is renowned for both it's audio quality reproduction and durability and each are in plenty of evidence here.

The labels are EXCELLENT- and would be excellent were it not for some light age discolouration and ink run marks on the side 2 label and just a few very faint, small spindle trace lines adjacent to the centre hole on each side.

The non-laminated and thick cardboard outer sleeve is VG+. The edges and spine are near perfect with barely any scuffing or storage wear at all, but although the corners remain well defined there is some obvious rubbing and the bottom right hand corner has a 1.5cm split from the opening edge. The opening edges themselves are not frayed and although side 2 has a name written on it in blue biro (see photo), and suffers just a little from age discolouration, it remains in overall a very good+ and highly presentable condition.

Finally, the quality of the audio is an overall VG+. Great tone and clarity with no distortion either at higher volume or on the higher frequencies. There is some mild background crackle at the beginning of each side which recurs intermittently (as very background) during a few of the quieter moments and I counted three mild background clicks on side 1. These audio blemishes are minor if not negligible because once the music gets going...wow!  An impressive listen throughout with musicians Sonny Rollins (tenor sax), Jay Jay Johnson (trombone), Horace Silver (piano), Theloniius Monk (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Art Blakey (drums) at the top of their game.

Comes with original BLUE NOTE inner sleeve which has a 3cm split at the bottom and a little age discolouration but still fully functional. I supply a new plain white die-cut inner sleeve as a matter of course.

In summary, an impressive very early US BLUE NOTE pressing of this very rare 1957 jazz classic, with some minor blemishes but still highly presentable and a great listen (remarkable for a 60 year old record!).

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl cardboard mailer along with at least two cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in removing the record from the outer sleeve in order to prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

Description: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

Description: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packag­ing might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good

Description: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable sur­face marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

Description: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

Fair 

Description: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for prop­erly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

Poor

Description: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

Description: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
