Description

An original 1st stereo press of TFTPT on UK CBS. Matrix A1/B1 - 1st cut. Looks like there are several A1/B1 cuts on Ebay touted as 1st pressing - and many are probably not. Are the mono pressings definitely 1st press - errrr no! This Lp was 1st released in December 1968 - earlier than the publishing dates on the labels might suggest. So, how does one distinguish between a 1968 copy and one from 1970 - given that they will, on the face if it, look quite similar? Well, with the record the first sign is the weight of the vinyl - true 1st pressings should be on '68 stock...solid vinyl. By '70 CBS had already started tinkering with vinyl weights. The second giveaway is the record cover they come housed in. At 1st release in Dec 1968 - CBS would have used the mono sleeves printed earlier in '68 and stickered them 'stereo' on the rear. Also note that over the period '68-'70 there seems to have been a couple of iterations of the cartridge advice down in the bottom right corner. A TRUE 1st stereo should have this initial stickered advice plastered over the original mono advice. Later you will see copies with revised text actually printed on the cover - these are not, then, '68 copies. Hope that's all clear. Worth insisting on 1st press - you're nearer the original masters and they are pressed that bit heavier. We also have the original generic white inner sleeve.
Vinyl (Ex/Vg+) In lovely condition and has only seen relatively light use. Under close inspection there are a couple of light marks per side - nothing troublesome though. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT level of playback with deviation in just a couple of tracks. A real sweet player with a very lush presentation. Intros and inbetweens are very nice and quiet and the audio comes across with excellent clarity. All I can detect was a bit of light background in one track per side [e.g. Darlin If]. Other than that expect a very nice clean rendition which delivers this SPIRIT classic to maximum effect.
Cover (Vg+) A bit of a pain to find in top level condition due to the use of a white/black colour scheme. The front looks ace - its flat without ageing or creasing. The rear exhibits just a touch of light ageing at the extremities and slight grubbiness in one or two spots. Edge wear is slight and the spine looks in very good order with all text legible. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
Inner (Vg+) Light ageing. Bottom edge split has been taped up.
