CONDITION

Vinyl: EX (+)

(A beautiful thick vinyl 1968 UK 'DEEP GROOVE' (Manufactured by DECCA on behalf of RCA) original first pressing which still retains a deep, glossy sheen. The shiny surfaces are beautiful with only a couple of light paper marks, and a few faint inaudible wispy hairlines, seen under a bright light. The vinyl has only been played occasionally and very carefully handled in the 43 years I have owned it from new! The record plays superbly, delivering excellent audio throughout with great powerful MONO sound clarity with just occasional minor surface noise only really noticeable on the track divisions and quiter lead-in sections. A fabulous original UK RCA 1st MONO 'DEEP GROOVE' pressing of this great album. I very much doubt if you can find a significantly better original 1ST PRESSING UK MONO 'DEEP GROOVE' COPY of this fantastic lp)

Labels: EX

(The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with a few spindle traces)

LP Sleeve: EX

(The original front laminated sleeve is in excellent condition. On the front there is barely noticeable minor ringwear, a couple of tiny scuff marks near the top seam along with a few small creases near the corners and edges. Nothing serious. All the seams are solid with hardly any shelfwear to speak of. The spine is arrow straight with the text bold and fully legible. The rear is very clean with only very minor light wear. Overall the sleeve is very solid, with no writing, no tears and no rips. A lovely copy of this tremendously rare 1st pressing 'Clout & Baker' Mono cover with the 'White' background)

Ultra RARE ORIGINAL 1968 UK 1st MONO PRESSING issue of the CLASSIC first STEPPENWOLF LP

On offer here is an excellent condition original 1968 UK MONO 1st 'DEEP GROOVE' pressing of the classic self-titled debut lp by STEPPENWOLF, released on the UK (Made In England) 1st press 'Red Spot' RCA Victor Black label.

Steppenwolf entered the studio for their recording debut in mid-1968 with a lot of confidence -- based on a heavy rehearsal schedule before they ever got signed -- and it shows on this album, a fantastically strong debut album from a tight hard rock psych outfit who was obviously searching for a hook to hang their sound on.
The playing is about as loud and powerful as anything being put out by a major record label in 1968. On this album, the best material comes from outside the ranks of the active band-members: "Born to Be Wild" by ex-member Mars Bonfire, which became not only a chart-topping high-energy anthem for the counterculture (a status solidified by its use in Dennis Hopper's movie Easy Rider the following year), but coined the phrase heavy metal, thus giving a genre-specific name to the brand of music that the band played (and which was already manifesting itself in the work of bands like Vanilla Fudge and the just-emerging Led Zeppelin); the Don Covay cover "Sookie, Sookie," which, as a single by the group, actually got played on some soul stations until they found out that Steppenwolf was white; two superb homages to Chess Records, in the guise of "Berry Rides Again", written (though "adapted" might be a better word) by Kay based on the work of Chuck Berry, and the Willie Dixon cover "Hoochie Coochie Man"; and Hoyt Axton's "The Pusher", an anti-drug song turned into a pounding six-minute tour de force by the band.

UK RCA VICTOR (RD 7974) FIRST *MONO* DEEP GROOVE PRESSING (October 1968) OF STEPPENWOLF'S SUPERB DEBUT LP - THIS IS THE INITIAL VERY FIRST MONO DEEP GROOVE PRESSING HOUSED IN THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE 'CLOUT & BAKER' FRONT LAMINATED SLEEVE WHICH HAS A WHITE BACKGROUND (LATER SLEEVES WERE SILVERED) AND IT WAS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR A VERY SHORT TIME IN MONO BEFORE THE STATESIDE LABEL RELEASED THE STEREO VERSION IN 1970.

THIS COPY HAS BEEN MINE FROM NEW AND HAS ONLY BEEN LIGHTLY PLAYED OVER THE INTERVENING 43 YEARS !! IT STILL SOUNDS VERY IMPRESSIVE INDEED PROVIDING A HUGELY ENJOYABLE LISTEN AS I TYPE THIS.

PRESSED ON QUALITY THICK VINYL WHICH DELIVERS A CRYSTAL CLEAR AND SHARP MONO CUT - AS YOU WOULD EXPECT FROM DECCA (THEY MANUFACTURED THE RCA VICTOR LABEL) WHO PRODUCED SOME OF THE FINEST SOUNDING RECORDS OF THE PERIOD.
THE VINYL HAS THE FIRST ISSUE 'RED SPOT' RCA VICTOR BLACK LABELS
MATRIX: D - 50029 A - 1K / D - 50029 B - 1K
MOTHERS/STAMPERS: 1/U and 2/U (reputedly indicating this to be one of the initial batch of 300-600 copies of the press!!)
AND THE RECORD IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL (FIRST ISSUE) FRONT LAMINATED SLEEVE "Printed in England by Clout & Baker Ltd."
COMES COMPLETE WITH THE CORRECT ORIGINAL POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVE
