STRING DRIVEN THING – Original Issue – CONCORD stereo CON-S 1001
This is one of the relatively rare original 1970 first pressings on the independent Concord label which was strictly limited to an issue of only 99 copies. It features the original String Driven Thing line-up: Chris Adams (guitar, vocals), Pauline Adams (vocals, percussion), John Mannion (guitar). It has a G&L front-laminated flip-back sleeve. Two of the names on the group photo on the rear have been transposed in ink (see photo) – we do not know if the alterations are correct. Tracks are: (side 1) July morning, Say what you like, Magic garden, Wonderful places, I don’t wanna wake up, City man; (side 2) Another night in this old city, That’s my lady, Catch as catch can, No more you and I, Lie back and let it happen, One of the lonely people.
The visual condition of this record is terrible. When we first removed the disc from the sleeve our hearts sank – would it even be worth listening to? But once on the deck the ugly duckling became a swan. No background noise, no jumps, no sticks – the only faults we could hear are: Side 1 – 3 noticeable ticks before the start; faint brief crackle between tracks 3 and 4; track 4 has possibly a few light ticks but these could easily be the backing!, one definite tick at end of track 4. Side 2 has about 20 light random ticks and occasionally a few seconds of very faint crackle. We suggest that the purchaser plays the record before looking at it (maybe you could ask a friend to put it on for you?) It really is difficult to believe that something that looks so bad can play so well. There are scratches, scuffs and marks all over the playing surfaces, a real turn-off – until you hear it!
