SUDAN Osman al-Shafi UNKNOWN 45 Original 60s/70s Munsphone ETHIO 7 inch LISTEN
Osman al-Shafi - Ilafani Munsphone Sudan 197?Totally off the radar and unique 7 inch released in the early 70s (or late 60s?) on Sudan label Munsphone. Musically this fuses Arabic singing, heavy percussion backdrop, Egypt style violins and enchanting choruses… Superb! And if you are into Ethio jazz and other sounds from the region (taarab, Somali music etc) then you should check out the audio preview. This song is cut up into two parts as it was too long for one side, in fact it cuts off abruptly and continues on side 2.
Other releases on this label have been equally hard to find, few records from the era seem to have survived. Check out the snippets and have a look at my other items for three more singles on the same label. In very nice shape, these look and sound as if they were not played very often, a bit rough recording which adds to the charm. The sleeve is written in Arabic, mine is a phonetic transcription of the title.
