SUN RA The Magic City 1966 SATURN RECORDS (LPB 711)
B&W LABELS w/CHICAGO ADDRESS, HANDMADE RA COVER
Sun Ra And His Solar ArkestraThe Magic City
ORIGINAL 1966 SATURN RECORDS PRESSING (LPB 711) OF SUN RA'S 'The Magic City'
ONE THE ARKESTRA'S FINEST PIECES OF WORK
Recorded in two sessions in 1965 the record was released on Ra's own Saturn label in 1966
'The Shadow World', 'Abstract Eye' and "'Abstract 'I'' were recorded live at Olatunji's loft, New York, Spring 1965.
'The Magic City' was recorded during rehearsals around 24 September, 1965
The record is notable especially for the title track, on which "The Arkestra's range of feelings and sound is expressed in a design that's simply unprecedented in jazz."
Lindsay Planer writes: The boundaries of Sun Ra's self-proclaimed "space jazz" underwent a transformation in the mid-'60s. The Magic City is an aural snapshot of that metamorphic process.
Many enthusiasts and scholars consider this to be among Ra's most definitive studio recordings
The title Magic City refers to Ra's home town of Birmingham, Alabama, and to a large metal sign with the words 'Birmingham, The Magic City' erected in front of the railway station in 1926.
The cover drawing,by Sun Ra (even though "cover art" is credited to William White), directly references the dome of the station.

LABELS: NEAR MINT
Clean, bright and unmarked labels with only two/three light spindle traces per side
VINYL Visual: VERY GOOD+
There are some superficial pressing blemishes and pressing 'dimples' and marks on the run-in to Side Two (inherent in these small scale independent pressing) but none of these have any significant audio impact.
Pressed in very, very small numbers - El Saturn Records purchased no advertising, gave out no promotional copies for review, and no distribution channels were available except mail order, hand delivery to the record shops, and, in the southern tradition, sales from the bandstand after performances
VINYL Audio: VERY GOOD+
Both sides play extremely well throughout with crystal clear, loud, bright and razor sharp sound.
There is the occasional click/pop and some surface noise on the end/into the run-off on Side One, and some surface noise on the track divisions, quiet sections and run-off on Side Two but nothing which spoilt my immense listening pleasure at all (all no doubt present from new as this has seen little play) - sounds great.
Side One is one long, open, loose free-jazz masterpiece full of dynamic tension with absolutely sensational ensemble work from the band.
The three pieces on Side Two are again loose and abstract and equally superb.
Another fantastic release from The Arkestra and one of their finest
SLEEVE: NEAR MINT
The original thick card matt cover is clean and unmarked with no splits or wear to the edges or spine (where all text is clear and bold)
