Description
An absolutely beautiful album....'Bookends' consolidated Simon's reputation as a deeply thoughtful songwriter, whose material could be taken to aesthetically desirable heights by the ethereal voice of Art Garfunkel. Produced by Roy Halee and S & G, 'Bookends' holds together like a concept album. No doubt Simon's involvement in attempting to write music for Mike Nichols upcoming film, 'The Graduate' in 1967, directly influenced the final outcome of 'Bookends'. The film brought considerable benefits to Simon & Garfunkel. The release of the soundtrack Lp to 'The Graduate' topped the U.S. chart for 9 weeks, and gave 'Bookends' a push start and placed the Lp at the top of the U.S. album chart for 7 weeks. The hit single from 'The Graduate' soundtrack of course, was the song 'Mrs. Robinson', which also appeared on 'Bookends'. Another outstanding song from the album is 'America', one of several songs inspired by Simon's English girlfriend, Kathy, who is actually mentioned in the song by name.
This superb Japanese pressing (SONX 60012) dates from 1970/71 and has the orange "2-eye" CBS labels. Both labels have the deep groove notches and the audio is sensational....as good, if not better, than the 1st U.S. pressing from 1968. The vocals are more defined and the acoustic guitars are much more natural sounding. A rare and hard to find pressing.
Condition of Lp Jacket: Near Mint.....the cover is made of thick, sturdy card stock which has been coated with a lovely varnish. Beautiful condition showing only the slightest wear. No Obi.
Condition of Lyric Insert: Near Mint....printed on thicker than usual paper....only the slightest signs of age discoloration appear.
Condition of Record: Near Mint: ......excellent shine on the playing surface....some "pressing anomalies" and marks are visible but have no bearing on playback. When raised to a light source one can see right through, which indicates the use of virgin vinyl.....the audio is stunning.
