Description
Here is one of the most sought after Heavy Metal Music records of all time, the debut album “Winter Kill” from Chicago underground metal band Slauter Xstroyes. The band tore apart the Chicago metal scene in the mid 1980’s with their own brand of power metal in the vain of Iron Maiden and Mercyful Fate. The band released their debut record “Winter Kill” in 1985, without any record label, pressing only 500 copies, and was only sold at the band’s shows and from band members, and this is one of those original albums. Slauter Xstroyes disbanded in the late 1980’s, and this was their only official vinyl release. The album was re-released in the late 1990’s under the Monster Records label, along with the release of their second unfinished record and collection of demos called “Free the Beast.”
I obtained the album after it was given to me by a co-worker about 20 years ago in a box of old records he no longer wanted, and this was the gem of the bunch. The album jacket does show signs of wear and discoloring, and there is some staining and marking , but no major rips, tears or damage. Vinyl record has no visible scratches or damage of any kind. Original lyric sheet is included, and does have some crinkling of the paper, but no tearing.
The rear of the jacket does have the signatures of two of the original band members, those of guitarist Paul Kratky and bassist Brent Sullivan. Slauter Xstroyes played a reunion show on Dec. 13, 2013 at Nitecaps club in Chicago, IL and I asked them to sign the jacket at that time.
There is also what could be the signature of singer John Stewart on the jacket as well, but this was obtained by the original owner of the record, and I cannot confirm that it is indeed, his signature, but Kratky and Sullivan told me at the reunion show that it could be his autograph, as that is how he wrote his signature. There is some scribbling under his signature, as if someone scribbled over a message that was written on it. Again, that was how I obtained it, not done by me.
I hate to part with this piece of Chicago heavy metal history, but I no longer have a record player, and I don’t want to leave it sit around, fearing it may get damaged. (plus, I found the re-release on CD on Amazon. The disc cost me $35, but is worth it!)
