Description

Sonny Rollins Volume 2. This is an early US Blue Note 1558 true mono with the 47 W.63rd NYC labels, an unusual variant with the 2nd side deep grooved, with the RVG stamp and the sometimes incorrectly referred to ear which is really the plastylite pressing plant stylised "p". The two styles of label are used between 1958 (i.e. around BLP 1544) to 1962 (i.e. BLP 1577). As the number for this falls between these two examples given in the Penndorf online labelography, this transitional pairing of labels is acceptably in the norm for a very early issue, and he shows both types within this era as 1b variants, quite possibly differentiated by the alternative pressing machines at plastylite, as pancaked and inner grooved English deccas of the 50's are.

I have heard both sides of this lp, and the stamp of it is clean and clear, not sounding like the late end of a run, far superior to the later US & UK pressings of it in my own collection.

Playing surfaces and labels in lovely condition, sleeve not far behind, little scuff to the top layer just under sonny's horn at the base of the sleeve as seen, light dirt to rear may clean off with careful attention and a Mecolico import sticker to the rear, showing import duty has been paid at customs. Sleeve address is 43 west 61st New York 23 as shown in the pictures.
