~~ Excellent prog folk album! 'From The Witchwood' treats us to a range of songs with different moods and styles from the stunningly joyous "A Glimpse of Heaven" through the sensual "Shepherd's Song" and the poignant, melodic "In Amongst the Roses".
There are plenty of rich and full harmonies from Dave Cousins and Tony Hudson-Ford. The arrangements are superb, making use of traditional "folky" instruments such as recorders and acoustic guitars and more exotic and modern instruments (sitar, moog and their first use of mellotron) to create mature, pastoral compostions.
This album is a little gem that deserves more attention. The songwriting also must be noted, especially for the work from Cousins, which sets this stuff apart from other groups. It is very special, as with the previous and following releases. Just listen out for the lyrics which can contain some engaging tales. Sometimes it's haunting, emotional as well as enchanting, and warm. Thoroughly recommended.
