Excellent condition example of this seminal New Zealand punk record. The Suburban Reptiles were formed in late 1976 by Auckland students Simon Grigg and Brett Salter, inspired by encouragement from filmmaker David Blyth. Initially, Grigg and Salter had intended to start a jazz band, but Blyth’s influence - and a live review of the Sex Pistols in New Musical Express - steered them toward punk.
The band’s early days were marked by a sense of isolation, as they believed they were the only punks in Auckland. That changed one evening at the Globe Hotel when they encountered the Scavengers, another group who had similarly thought they were alone in the local punk scene. Around this time, the Suburban Reptiles recorded their debut release: a double A-side single, the first of its kind in New Zealand. The recording sessions, held at Harlequin Studios in Mount Eden, were nominally produced by Tim Finn - though he reportedly slept through much of the process.
The Suburban Reptiles’ short but chaotic career saw them fired from a Catholic boys’ school, pursued relentlessly by a sensationalist media (landing them on front pages repeatedly), and even attacked by a vigilante mob at a student arts festival in Wellington. Their impact was disruptive, iconic, and undeniably punk.
