1968* Reissue of first LP manufactured by Saturn Records in 1956. 

Third design of cover.  Unlike later artwork, this one is multi-hued. Beyond the Midnight Blue, Yellow and Purple, there can be seen some green lines as one holds the album.  It seems to change in color(s) according to the angle it is held at.  It is possible we are 'out there' ala Sun Ra himself, however, we think it quite possible that what appears as ring wear, was placed there by design (how it will look in the ''21st century for which the music was made'').

Vinyl is Graded Excellent.  Surface of Vinyl is Clean.  There is very little surface noise that can be heard on some tracks.   Most of the album is free of any background noise.  The Sleeve has been graded VG.  We did consider the vintage of this  release when grading the Sleeve.  It is a heavy cardboard such as was used in the 1960s. There is no serious wear, or  weak points where the Sleeve is wearing through.  We have posted photos of the left side  (binding), top and front edges  for your reference. It is an extremely interesting cover to gaze upon - please see our comments above.

Sun Ra had only been heading his Arkestra for a couple of years when they recorded the 11 songs featured on this 1956 session. But while the arrangements, ensemble work, and solos are not as ambitious, expansive, or free-wheeling as they became on later outings, the groundwork was laid on such cuts as "India," "Sunology," and "Blues At Midnight"."  Ra's band already had the essential swinging quality and first-class soloists, and he had gradually challenged them with compositions that did not rely on conventional hard bop riffs, chord changes, and structure but demanded a personalized approach and understanding of sound and rhythm far beyond standard thinking. You can hear in Ra's solos and those of John Gilmore, Pat Patrick, Charles Davis, and others an emerging freedom and looseness which would explode in the future.  AllMusic
