This handsome LP – a superb collector’s copy – from Epic (BC 1254, US pressing, blue label, stereo) features George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra in a marvelous pairing of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F Major Op. 93 and Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in D minor Op. 120.
The exact discographic details are as follows:
Beethoven: Symphony No. 8 in F Major Op. 93
(rec. at Severance Hall, Cleveland, on 12 March 1960)
Schumann: Symphony No. 4 in D minor Op. 120
(rec. at Severance Hall, Cleveland, on 15 April 1961)
These are glorious performances, imbued with a drama and vitality that leave most of their rivals far behind. Nor are they over-driven or lacking in warmth, charges too casually levied at Szell’s performances without the given critic actually having listened to the recording at hand. Admirers of Szell, great conducting, great orchestral playing, Beethoven, and/or Schumann need not hesitate.
These sessions were produced by Howard Scott. There are authoritative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Emanuel Winternitz (Schumann) and Klaus George Roy (Beethoven). The striking cover design is uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minor bumping at corners, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an outstanding collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
