This beautiful and extrordinarily rare LP from French Columbia (SAXF 989, French Pathé Marconi pressing, blue/silver label – ED1, stereo, “baguette”-style jacket, dowel spine) features conductor George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra’s high-octance account of Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major Op. 100, taped in the warm acoustics of Severance Hall on 24 and 30 October 1959 – a landmark in the Prokofiev discography.
As Stravinsky once observed, the Cleveland Orchestra under Szell played in the exact center of every note, yet that precision was achieved without loss of color or drama, and this powerful, trenchant, technicolor performance suggest that at that time, the Clevelanders constituted the finest orchestra in the land. The sound – from the ‘Golden Age of Stereo’ – is breathtaking in its impact and amplitude, a true tour de force – truly phenomenal.
The reverse side of the jacket carries insightful liner notes by Michel-R. Hofmann, printed in French only. The lovely cover art reproduces a detail from Leonardo Cremonini’s “Corps Végétal”.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a 2” split to the upper-right corner and mild shelfwear elsewhere, but really that is all. There are no owners’ markings, bends, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector’s copy.
The condition of the dowel spine is VERY GOOD. There is one small tear to the paper sleeve and some discoloration, but it is otherwise fine.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although surfaces are not perfectly silent, and there are a few scattered soft tics (nothing repetitive), this remains a fine copy and playback is iimpressive. However, if you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.
