Henryk Szeryng and Helmut Walcha are two artists for which Bach's music was at the core of their repertoire. This classic set throws us back to an era in which the violin and harpsichord sonatas were performed not by baroque music specialists, but by great musicians in general. Szeryng and Walcha are certainly great artists. They approach Bach's music with an almost pious respect. Perhaps the best way to describe this approach is to quote Mr. John Henry Crosby from his review of Sonatas and Partitas on this site: "let the music speak for itself while still leaving undeniable mark on the it. That is true artistry!"
The recordings were briefly available on compact disc at the dawn of the CD era, and they were promptly deleted. They were unavailable before Philips decided to re-issue them in Japan in 1997. ~ George Murnu
