Rarity: Moderately scarce, seen far fewer of these compared to the first issue. ALSO: this copy is a much rarer red translucent pressing, which means it glows an eerie red when placed closely to a bright light bulb source. It still appears black when viewed normally, but under light, its red. Translucent means light can pass through an object, but no detail can be seen through. These pressings are limited and rare, and some very collectable and sort after.

Brief Info: The second album under the band name T. Rex. Regarded as their very best album and a pioneering release in the new glam-rock genre. One that catapulted Marc Bolan and the band to acclaim and super-stardom, vocal backing is provided by Volman and Kaylan, both were members of Zappa’s Mothers of Invention at this time. This a lovely Cube-Fly pressing that appears hardly played, and that very unusual and difficult to find as such. A high percentage of copies were bought by the teenage market of the early 1970s, and most played to near destruction on the most basic of record players. This pressing includes the same cover and includes the superb shaped Fly inner sleeve. The heavy pressed record plays beautifully throughout and was a joy to play-grade.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. The front has the rarely-seen promotional sticker and HIFLY 6 catalogue number as seen in close-up. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. The superb shaped Fly inner sleeve is also included.

Cover Front: This cover is the same as the very first issue and is one of the least rubbed I have seen in ages. The spine edge has a small scuff on the centre and the front lower area a very gentle rub which is actually over-emphasised by my camera flash. There is little else to fault on this side. The lack of price sticker tears, ugly ring wear, creasing and heavy rubbing are all major factors this cover seldom escapes. The HIFLY 6 promotional sticker is very crisp and neat, clearly never picked at or removed, the surface only has a gentle trace of discolouration. This feature unique to this pressing and rarely ever seen.

Cover Back: Wow!, this has to be the very best back on this cover I have seen to date. Any blemishes are few, very gentle and faint. Ringwear?, what ringwear?, this surface near impossible to find so hardly worn.

Top Edge: Straight with any rub traces tiny and very light.

Bottom Edge: Again straight, any rubbing very patchy and mostly light, most near the right corner which is a little heavier. For a black storage edge, this has fared well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Still impressively sharp with any thickening traces minuscule. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: The central area has a fairly mild scuff or dink. That apart little else to fault. Solid, straight with any compression small. The text is unworn and strong.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: The small spine rub apart, a very strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. With the main surfaces this clean and impressive, this famous cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this Fly inner is quite elusive in its own right and try finding one much better. This a shaped angle-cut unlined inner with the famous giant Fly logo on one side. The back is more plain but has two side exterior flipbacks as construction and includes the ‘patent nos. 1,125,555’ text. This is very clean, fresh and attractive with hardly any creasing and all edges naturally intact. The giant Fly logo is magnificent as-seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better, a faint paper scuff that does nothing whatsoever stops a Mint minus grading. I rarely seen an early copy of this looking so unused or abused. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any other surface traces few, very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality pressed album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early Cube-Fly pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
