Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: SX 6035.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. About average for the late 60s.

Rarity: Scarce: and I truly state, this first mono issue on the new single box Parlophone label is much rarer than the turquoise and black original. Not only that, if you want pristine perfect sound, look no further. Few originals will ever boast that. The loud mix and vocals do not stand up to too much playing on Dansettes and the like. The complex groove walls shredded by massive tracking weights and thick, often blunt stylus stubs. This barely played gem has suffered no mistreatment and looks hardly even played and sounds fantastic. All the beautiful mono mix singles sharp, clear and precise with no distortions or crackle. If sound quality is paramount, this elusive new label copy delivers.

Brief Info: Put simply, a superb collection of 14 of The Animals most successful titles – so states the back cover. All heard to absolute maximum advantage on this superb, little-played and more elusive 1969 repressing on the new single box Columbia format. The big advantage for a later pressing is the more likelihood of it avoiding the more basic record players of the mid-60s and the preservation of the wonderful original mono sound. Very much the case here, all the classics including ‘We’ve Gotta Get Out of This Place’, ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’ and ‘House of the Rising Sun’ are all heard as they were pressed back in the late 60s. For fans of this classic band this is indispensable.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this hardly does this vintage cover full justice. A single format with front laminate. This covers all the closed folds and ends on three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents pending’ text. Includes the original EMI promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A super front with little to fault – being so black, this is somewhat revealing. The laminate is shiny, fresh and clear and all is fully adhered with no lifts of blisters. Under light, only very faint traces of any friction rubs or dulling are seen and most of any fine creases are seen on the edges that few covers, especially this great age will ever avoid totally. This front is really quite impressive, more are seen badly fogged and aged with major laminate issues.

Cover Back: The unprotected back is almost equally fine. A little faint grubbiness or minor marks near the left edge but little else. Any ageing is incredibly modest and this gives few clues to it’s considerable vintage. Barely any creases and the flipbacks are in near supreme condition with nt grubbiness, lifts or damage – still white too with lovely laminate shine. Any tone spot traces are tiny and faint and the only small end burr on the central bottom flipback end is equally small and faint. Covers of this style issued in the 1960s seldom remain so devoid of wear, damage and ageing and this should please collectors of this golden era of popular music.

Top Edge: Almost as made up to the right tip.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, mainly straight with minimal traces of compression. The ends are quite deeply pinched in manufacture and all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and clear laminate. Slight rub traces near the spine top and a couple of fine hairline surface creases.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is very small and light. All retain near excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this lovely late-60’s cover. This one will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractively dark-fronted item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): only marked down for mild record rim impression, and how many will ever avoid that? An unlined EMI promotional inner advertising albums up the early 70s including ‘Abbey Road’ and ‘Let it Be’. All edges are unsplit with no tearing, that quite an achievement itself, there are no repairs and barely a crease to be seen. This one has aged little at all.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed on very thick vinyl. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, fine, light and faint. No penetrating scratches at all and any minor blemishes are non-sounding. Remember, just one arm drop or jolt on a Dansette or similar record player, usually resulted in a disastrous scratch or crater inflicted to ruin the record. Such players often tracked in excess of 10+ grams which by modern standards sounds extreme (and is for a record surface). No small wonder so many records of this era are right-offs. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very well preserved record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. The lack of crackle, groove wear or breakup to the sound is always the best news for old mono records. The audio quality is sharp, precise and focused throughout, yes including those critical area inner bands where the tracking angle became more critical. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
