Description

The Beatles : Revolver 2/1 1st Press 'Withdrawn Remix 11' edition

This is without doubt of the most collectable albums from their catalogue and whilst S1 has some interference here and there S2 plays to an exemplary standard for the vast majority.  The all important 'Remix 11' of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' in particular plays with great clarity, power and depth.  Visually the vinyl is in excellent condition compared to so many you see today with only minimal marking the most obvious of which is one small scratch on S1 and a hairline mark on S2.

The G&L Patents pending cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear and the original plain white inner is also in excellent shape.

I'm sure this famous LP needs no introduction but production of this first pressing was soon stopped as John did not like the original mix of 'Tomorrow Never Knows'  and this mix became known as 'Remix 11' or the 'withdrawn mix'.  This is denoted by the 2/1 matrix and that Doctor Robert is misprinted as Dr. Robert on both the label and cover.  The cover also has a small mono on the front.

The audio on S1 is VG+ (T1 & T7 Ex / T4 intro VG / T6 VG )

The audio on S2 is Ex+ (T1 intro G+ then Ex for remainder / T4, T5 & T7 Near Mint)

The cover is Ex-

The labels are Ex

The inner sleeve is Ex+

Visual grading

The vinyl still has a very impressive visual 'look' and a very glossy sheen also.  S1 has only a small number of faint hairlines, a few minor 'specks' and one tiny scratch on track 6.  S2 is very clean but does have one obvious hairline scratch type mark on the final two tracks but this has no affect on the audio.  There is no dulling of the surface area, no groove wear and whilst the labels have a fair amount of spindle wear they remain very clean with no other marking.  The matrix is very clear on S1 but I could only just make out the M on S2.  The KT tax code can clearly be seen on the S1 label.

Play grading

The countdown intro on 'Taxman' has a couple of clicks and as the music comes in the playback is very clean with only very minimal 'background' here and there which is not intrusive.  There are no other clicks or pops and only a small number of very light ticks and the clarity is actually very impressive.  Harrison's first brief solo is so strong and has no distortion.  The fade out has a little more static but overall this does deserve an Ex grade at the very least.

'Eleanor Rigby' has some light static / a little crackle on the intro and first verse but it isn't loud and you can still hear the music and vocal very clearly.  From then on it plays with great clarity and only the final verse has just a little more 'background'.  Overall I think VG+ is fair - it is still a very acceptable version.

'I'm Only Sleeping' plays with some light intermittent static but it is in the background and largely non-intrusive.  There are a couple of light clicks in the quieter bass section towards the end and again VG+ is a honest assessment of the audio.  Just a little more interference on the fade out again.

The tabla intro on 'Love You To' has a little crackle which soon disappears and the remainder of this section plays with excellent clarity.  The first vocal is very clean and it continues to play extremely well with only minimal interference.  A couple of very light clicks in the middle section and a couple of ticks.  I'd say VG on the intro and VG+ for the remainder.

'Here, There And Everywhere' has one click on the intro and one near the end but on the whole it plays very clearly for a quieter track.  Yes there is some light static here and there (!) but again I think VG+ is deserved.

The intro on 'Yellow Submarine' has only minimal static and then plays very clearly apart from about 8 clicks in the middle section caused by a small scratch.  The rest of the track plays with great clarity in the main with just one click and a couple of light ticks near the end.  VG overall.

The final track 'She Said She Said' is actually quite impressive.  There is no real interference, barely any distortion and no obvious static at all.  An Ex finish to the side.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The intro on 'Good Day Sunshine' has a little 'hissing' for about 7/8 seconds and it then plays with very strong audio with hardly any intrusion.  3/4 very light ticks but they are obviously not intrusive and apart from the intro the clarity here is a definite improvement on S1.  I'd say Ex for the majority but with a G+ intro.

'And Your Bird Can Sing' plays with great clarity, power and depth with only a couple of static ticks on the fade out.  This is so close to Near Mint but will grade as Ex+ to be cautious.

'For No One' plays beautifully with barely any 'background'.  The clarity here can hardly be faulted and all I heard were a 3/4 light ticks near the end.  This is Ex+ but with many sections better than that.

This fine standard in continued into 'Dr. Robert' which plays with tremendous power and clarity from start to finish.  This is a very strong version with only a minor touch of barely audible static.  I think Near Mint is justified here.

The intro on 'I Want To Tell You' plays perfectly and that sonic quality is maintained as the vocal beings.  From then on it plays with exceptional audio with no sign of any interference.  This is a very powerful version with barely any distortion and again Near Mint is fair.

'Got To Get You Into My Life' plays with excellent audio and no obvious intrusion.  I detected just one light tick and just a minor amount of background static which is very quiet anyway.  This is being played through a stereo set so I'm sure the audio could be improved when plays as 'mono'.  A bit of 'background' on the fade out but Ex+ overall.

The 'withdrawn mix' of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' only has a couple of ticks on the intro and then plays with genuine quality for the remainder.  There is no inner groove distortion and the sonic quality is stunning in my opinion.  Ok a couple of light clicks on the fade out but I do think a Near Mint grade is deserved.

In summary this very collectable album does have some have some interference on S1 but is still a very worthwhile listen shall we say.  This interference is intermittent and many sections still play very well.  S2 is the highlight though - a little interference on the first few seconds but the rest of the side is very impressive indeed.  So it is not the best 'Withdrawn Mix' I have ever sold but I'm sure there are many out there not as good as this one!

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

The laminated G & L Patents pending cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear.  The edges and thin pinched spine are in superb condition with no rubbing and the corners are also very clean with hardly any wear.  The opening edge has a little handling wear but not an excessive amount.  The front cover is in excellent shape with no marking and only 4/5 faint laminate creases plus the same number of the usual faint creases next to the spine.  There is a small corner crease lower right.  The back cover, so often badly worn, is very clean with some light creasing lower left, some minor 'feathering' next to the opening edge and a couple of other creases on the black background.  This background is in great shape with no marking which is a rarity and as can be seen the flipbacks are also in superb condition with minor spotting top left and a handful of light creases along the bottom one.  They are still firmly attached to the cover also.  A fine example overall.

The plain white die-cut inner has no side splits or tears and only very minimal creasing.  There is barely any marking, just very minor spotting.  It has Made In England and the Patent No printed on one side.
