The Beatles : Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 1/1 1st Stereo Press
This first stereo pressing plays with very impressive audio and has only very minimal interference and this is detailed below. It plays with great clarity, depth and warmth and has clearly not been overplayed. There is only very minimal spindle wear.
The famous cover is in superb condition with only minimal shelf wear and has hardly ever been opened. The inserts are also in great shape and remain beautifully clean with no marking. The red inner just has a couple of very small side splits.

The audio on S1 is Near Mint- (Mint- in many sections / T6 & T7 range between Ex & Ex+)
The audio on S2 ranges between Near Mint- and Mint- (T1 G+ for 3/4 seconds)

The cut out card is Mint
The labels are Near Mint-
Visual grading
The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a very impressive glossy sheen. This has clearly not been played very much as there is no groove wear and only very minimal spindle wear. There are no marks or scratches just some faint hairlines. There is one hairline on S2 that is a little more obvious but is still faint and has no affect on the audio of course. The run out grooves are also very clean and the matrix info can clearly be read.
Play grading
With a super clean run in the 'crowd' section on 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' has no 'background' and the first verse also plays with perfect clarity. It continues to play with very strong audio and there is no intrusion at all. A couple of very minor static sounds this a superb start to the album and Mint- is more than deserved.
I have to say I have played more mono versions of this classic album in recent times and I had forgotten just how different the intro on 'With A Little Help From My Friends' is on the stereo edition. Play them back to back there is a very different 'sound' to the music. From then the audio is stunning in every way! The clarity of the vocal is as impressive as I have ever heard and you each musical note is also so precise. I just noticed a couple of barely audible static sounds so will grade as Mint- again.
The classic 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' has a super clean intro and it continues to play with great clarity and definition. The only interference is one very dull sounding click during the second chorus but is certainly not loud. The remainder plays without fault and overall and Near Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio here.
'Getting Better' plays very well with no ticks, clicks or pops but does have just a very minor amount of static in the background. It is so minimal and perhaps isn't even worthy of mention but as my regulars know I like to be 100% in my grading. In now way is it intrusive and the audio is still very impressive. In fact the immaculate fade out shows just how good the clarity is! Near Mint-
The intro on 'Fixing A Hole' could not play any better and the first verse is equally as good. From then on it plays to a sublime standard with no interference. A stunning Mint- that doesn't even have a single dust tick on the fade out.
For some reason 'She's Leaving Home' always has some 'background' and that is true with both the stereo and mono versions. There are no ticks, clicks or pops but there is a little static distortion on the vocal here and there. It is mainly on the 'top end' of the chorus sections but it is not that intrusive and much of it plays very well indeed. This static is only quiet and is certainly better than many versions I have heard. I would say the audio ranges between Ex and Ex+
The intro on 'Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!' plays perfectly and continues to play with excellent clarity. There is only minimal inner groove distortion (very minimal!) and the majority of this track plays extremely well. The wurlitzer sections in particular are superb! I will grade as between Ex and Ex+ although that might be a little cautious.

The intro on 'Within You Without You' begins perfectly but after 15 seconds there are four clicks, three quite light and the other a little louder. As the vocal begins the audio is 'as new' and the remainder is of the same 'high end' standard. On a clean vinyl I'm always impressed by the audio definition on this track and that is very much in evidence here. It is a superb version and grades as Mint- but with a brief G+ section near the beginning.
'When I'm Sixty-Four' plays so clearly from start to finish with no clicks or pops and no underlying static either. I did detect a small number of very light ticks but in no way do they intrude on the quality of the listen. Near Mint-
'Lovely Rita' plays to an even higher standard with no intrusion of any kind. The clarity and depth of the audio is so good and infinitely deserves a Mint- grade.
'Good Morning, Good Morning' plays with great depth and power from the outset and progresses in much the same way with no interference. There is perhaps just a very minor touch of distortion but it is not intrusive in any way. You can still easily play it loud! Near Mint
The 'high octane' intro on the 'Sgt. Pepper's...' reprise is fantastic! It exudes power and has such a strong bass sound of course. It has lost none of its original quality over the last 53 years! The first vocal is of the same quality and to the end it plays with such precision. This is Mint- in every way.
The segue intro 'A Day In The Life' could not be any clearer and the opening vocal plays with wonderful clarity also. So far no ticks, clicks or pops and no static or crackle either. As the music builds into the first crescendo the playback is absolutely stunning and for once there is no distortion. The more up tempo section is 'as new' and the following 'orchestral' section is so powerful and has barely any static. The remainder cannot be faulted and the final 'crescendo' is breathtaking! There is barely any 'background' at the start of the piano 'note' and the final few grooves are also very 'clean' with only a couple of light ticks. This is a superb version of this classic and has no faults if I'm honest. The sonic quality is so impressive and even the 'nonsense' track at the end of the run out grooves is 'as new'! I believe Near Mint is an honest appraisal of the audio here and it provides a stunning end to this classic album.
In summary this first stereo pressing plays with great clarity and definition for the vast majority. Yes there is a little static/distortion on the final two tracks of S1 and four clicks near the beginning of S2 but aside from that there really are no negatives. It's very difficult to find a near mint / mint copy of this today but I am sure any avid collector would be as equally impressed with the audio quality as I am.
The Gatefold
The laminated G & L stereo cover is in lovely condition with barely any shelf wear. The top and bottom edge of the front cover are perfect and the edges of the back cover are also very clean but with a small area of wear in the centre. It is faint and really not that obvious. The spine for once is in excellent order and has only very minimal laminate wear. All corners are in great condition with no real wear and the opening edges are also in super clean with no obvious wear. The laminated front cover could hardly look any better and has only a couple of very small faint laminate creases which I did not even notice at first and the back cover is even better! The inside of the gatefold is beautiful! It has that 'crunch' type sound as you attempt to open it which suggests it has hardly ever been opened before and as such the inner spine has no damage at all which is a rarity. The colours are still so strong and vibrant and there is no marking anywhere. The top flipbacks are in perfect condition with no staining of the edges, now that is rare! Overall this truly is a fine example of this iconic cover.
The 'Fool' Inner Sleeve & Cut Out Card
The red 'fool' psychedelic inner is in excellent condition and has none of the marking, foxing or creasing that you so often see. It does have one very small split on one side and on the bottom edge they are 'clean' and not obvious at all. Just fine splits where the vinyl has pushed through slightly.
The cut out card is complete and in perfect condition with no marking or creasing.
The Labels
The yellow/black Parlophone labels are very clean with no writing on them and only one small faint circle 'mark' on the S2 label. There is only very minimal spindle wear and the KT tax code can clearly be seen on the S1 label.
