All boxes signed for in quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and traceable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Label/Format: Parlophone with text and credits deemed a ‘first pressing’. These have matt, gently textured surfaces. Side two have the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes, both letters pristine.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are fine and light with only few on side one, a little more on side two, but in context with one of the world’s most popular albums – these are only light. Importantly, both playing surfaces are very clean with minimal gentle surface marks under light and no penetrating stylus scratches. The very best news of all, both sides plays superbly with hardly anything unwanted. This superb mono record was a joy to play-grade.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of Record: 141 grams.

Rarity: Like most standard Beatles albums, this sold in vast numbers, even today, one of the most popular albums ever made. Condition is always of prime factor and finding very clean records with minimal usage is far harder, especially in mono. This complete ‘first’ issue is in excellent condition and plays beautifully. Mono copies subjected to heavy Dansette use simply do not survive too long before the sound degrades. This one has been carefully played and appears not that many times, it was a genuine thrill to play and will continue to do so for many years with careful use on modern lightweight tracking turntables. Such copies are less easy to find for sure.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Any music lover, collector and Beatles fan will know all about this groundbreaking classic. What I think is far more important is to make clear what is actually on offer and the visual and playing conditions.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a fully laminated gatefold format with the two large external top flipbacks inside. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with correct Mono mode printed on the back (top right). Includes the insert sheet and the original psychedelic inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: The main blemish on this cover is a rub on the front bottom right corner end, hardly major for a cover of immense popularity and considerable age. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with any dulling, marks or creases gentle and light. Just a couple of fine light half moons away from the edges on the front, any other creasing the usual edge hairlines. The lack of laminate lifting is always good news. Overall, this famous cover remains attractive and sets a high standard with all other corners hardly worn.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is equally attractive and offers a nice fresh ‘creak’ on opening. Yes the central hinge laminate is solid and unbroken (that now unusual, with most being broken, floppy and loose), meaning the cover will not open completely fully or totally flat. The only blemish that few escape, is a little pulling of the laminate end ink, here fine and neat. When closed on the lightly sticky laminate ends, these always stuck together, over time when opened again, this area resisted and pulled. Sometimes this could prove quite severe and damaging, but as seen, this here is only quite fine and light on the left side flipback end. There is little else to fault on these fresh, shiny surfaces.

Top Edges: Both immaculate, fully and smoothly laminated and still straight with no chipping or wear, also flush, flat and parallel.

Bottom Edges: As above with the aforementioned moderate rub on the front, and small one on the very end of the back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean, mostly very sharp with any thickening tiny, very little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record normally enters on the back edge, both are open, and are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A standard spine on this one with the text inverted. These are very prone to compression and forming central ridges on opening. This results in flaking and laminate loss, the text often sinking into the central area or even eroded away. This has largely been avoided with the text fully present and easy to read with no sinkage as any creasing is light with no recess formation (reiterating this cover has not been opened and closed too many times). This appears to retain most which is still mainly and quite smooth – this is more unusual. Solid, quite straight with any compression light. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A difficult spine that has fared exceptionally well compared to many seen.

Corners: As stated a moderate rub on the front bottom right – the leading corner that seldom escape some issues on most covers. Any rubbing to any others tiny and light. Excellent shape mostly retained with no knocks or dinks. The front is purely a rub, not a knock.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this classic 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. With few blemishes or reminders of age, this beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better, as most will have huge edge splits, tear and creasing, many even suffer ring wear from the thick record. Well this have avoided all of those common traits with all edges unsplit with no repairs. This made with thin paper and unlined, this remains clean, still fresh and attractive with impressive deep colour. One smallish stain on the front, and any discolouration of the seam area adhesive light and quite faint. This as the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text. By 1969 this inner was replaced by a plain white version. This one of the finest original inners I have seen for some time, they are notoriously difficult to find like this, and ofte missing altogether.

The Insert Sheet: PRACTICALLY MINT: deep colour, fresh and clean with no creasing, I can see nothing to fault, this is totally unaged. The back also immaculate with no writing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and this being very critical for arguably the world’s most popular album, in mono and over 50-years-old. An impressive mono record with unbanded track separation, this is impressively clean with fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy appearing modestly used on all the evidence with any surface marks light. Mostly super-fine hairlines or wispy surface traces as seen critically under bright light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches and the record plays beautifully with very little unwanted – that is so often not the case with many very noisy with crackle, clicks and the worst of all, groove wear and and distortion. All traits avoided here, any surface sound minimal and faint, even on the album’s most difficult song ‘She’s Leaving Home’ that often has horrendous crackle and even break-up of the sound and vocal – this critical song plays well on this copy with little unwanted also. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This copy plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Another masterclass in production by George Martin and this copy does it near maximum justice. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*, inherent pressing noises or flaws. Barely any clicks at all, this was simply a marvellous experience to play-grade, and the mono mix is still legendary with its warmth, dynamics and detail. I like both modes, but the connoisseurs still seem to prefer the mono version. Few available copies will outperform this very early mono pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system, I am certain this record has been played modestly lightly and generally with care. This has suffered no arm jolts or drops, and few mono record survive when that happens. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
