GRADING/CONDITION DISC(s)EXCELLENT+ (VERY NICE CLEAN record with MINIMAL playwear . Side one is unmarked apart from 2 very light marks one either side of the label that are noticable- well basically they are one mark which travels across the disc but go under the label, so I assume it was pressed like this, but have no effect on the reproduction no clicking etc. Side 2 is completely unmarked and looks like a new record. The sound is good throughout with a really nice mellow sound and a great STEREO mix, you can only get this sort of sound on vinyl no other medium comes anywhere near.

DETAILSOne of the most impressive things about this album to me is its restraint. What do I mean by that? The Moog Synthesizer had just come out at the time of this album's recording, and these fellas knew that it would be a huge mistake to just go nuts and plant synth lines into every song. Had this been a lesser group, this may have led to a disastrous, synth indulgent album, but the gang knew how to use the Moog tastefully, without overwhelming the songs. "Here Comes the Sun" might be the best example of this. The synth lines appear subtely, complementing the melody, and then brighten up gradually during the chorus for an added texture of warmth. It's a seemingly minor detail in an album filled with typical Beatles imagination, but it's one that really stands out as a testament to their genius to me.
Lennon's contributions really make the first side. "Come Together" just oozes cool, McCartney's bassline being one of the smoothest and best ever written. Side A's closer, "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" is a devilishly simple tune on the surface, though its chord progressions are of the kind only the Beatles could write well: shifting ever so slightly, bringing a new feel to the melodies played over top of them. In between, George, Ringo and Paul all each have a go (or two in Macca's case), and all are successful. "Octopus's Garden" has a superb bridge, "Something" intriguing modulation, and "Oh Darling" an exciting and raw rendition of a doo wop tune. McCartney to me was always the better belter than Lennon, and it shows here.
Side B, with its famous medley, is really Paul's baby. After "Because", another fantastic Lennon tune with some of the best harmonies of their career and more tasteful synth, "You Never Give Me Your Money" begins, which is the greatest example of Paul's range he ever recorded. Delicate piano lines start the song, with Paul's voice softly crooning on top, then at the 1:10 mark, we suddenly shift to a barrelhouse style piano, and the singing deepens and broadens to fit the uplifting mood. After some harmonies from the rest of the fab four, we get some key changes and the song jumps into a chugging bluesy stomp, McCartney ever on top of things with his now powerful bristling delivery. This is Paul's songwriting peak (and therefore the Beatles' peak as well).
What follows is only more excitement and imagination of composition, with recurring motifs (notice the horn line in "Carry That Weight"), and a final culmination of all their talents in a threeway guitar frenzy in "The End", Paul, George, and John having equally distinct styles and tones to their guitars. It might not be the most revolutionary or influential of the Beatles albums (that would be Revolver), but it is the best, and that's saying a lot.
