THE BEATLES-PLEASE PLEASE ME TYPE SINGLE LP-MONO LABEL/PRESSING INFO
PARLOPHONE YELLOW & BLACK 3RD PRESSING with "THE PARLOPHONE CO LTD" rim text with NO "Recording first published 1963" OR "Sold in U.K." label texts - (During 1963 EMI changed the label design to the now more familiar yellow & black and amongst other things a large 33 1/3 R.P.M. was added at the top of the label, the first of these however retained the small 33 1/3 to the right of the matrix number on the left side of the labels that appeared on the Black & Gold versions, and it is this "extra bit" that makes these pressings a bit special, they also have lower stampers than some of the 2nd pressings (apparantly) this one is 1 RA & 1 over 2 GL
CATALOGUE NUMBER PMC 1202 YEAR OF RELEASE 1963 COUNTRY OF RELEASE U.K. SLEEVE TYPE SINGLE and CORRECT sleeve for the pressing. Which is an Ernest J. Day LAMINATED FLIPBACK made of THICK CARD with a LARGE mono ON THE FRONT and the legend "Photo: Angus McBean" POSITIONED TO THE EXTREME RIGHT OF THE BOTTOM CORNER OF THE SLEEVE. INSERTS/EXTRAS ORIGINAL LINED "EMITEX" INNER GRADING/CONDITION DISC(s) EXCELLENT(ISH) ( I hate having to grade records that are not conveniently pigeonholed, are they VG+ are they EX or EX- , it becomes academic after a while when you are dealing with something that is equally as important for what it is as opposed to what it does, so I try my best to be as accurate as possible I don't like things like "VG plays MINT" or such phrases, mainly because when you are dealing with good old early 60's MONO records unless they have deep scratches they all play and sound really great, and this is no exception, it is obvious by looking at the labels that this record has been played more than a few times by the amount of colourloss around the spindleholes, but then again a lot of it was due to the propensity of record player manufacturers using oversized spindles which tore into the paper very quickly. Sure the record has some marks on it and even a bit of noticeable wear on a couple of the tracks, but it is all LIGHT surface stuff and having played it through a couple of times am more than happy with the reproduction and every track plays and sounds nearly perfectly with any background being confined to the track separators), and at the end of the day these pressings are quite hard to find. SLEEVEFront board.Inner gatefold EX
CLEAN SLEEVE with NO writing stickers or removal marks rips or tears. The front laminate is clean bright and shiny with hardly any rubbing wear or pressure marking and light laminate creasing.
Rear board EX REAR board is nice and clean with no writing rips or tears some light ageing and a bit of light handling wear Flipbacks EX- Flipbacks are mainly complete and stuck fast with a bit of wear along the top edge of the bottom a little bit missing in the bottom right corner Spine EX+ Best feature of the sleeve, really nice with hardly any wear and nice clear black on white lettering. Top & bottom edge VG- Top edge is fine with very light wear on and no laminate loss, bottom edge has some laminate loss, but more importantly there is about an inch of bare card running back from the righthand corner, can be easily strengthened with a small piece of clear tape, but I have left as it is. Opening EX The opening is straight with no major wear but as with these heavy card sleeves looks and feels a bit weak. Corners VG Top corners are fine with just light wear, the bottom 2 are worn with bare card, as always the pictures give a lot of the detail. INNER /EXTRASEMITEX INNER: EXCELLENT (NICE and clean with just light wear ,no rips tears edge splits and the inner bag is complete and firmly attached to the body of the sleeve.)
DETAILSOnce "Please Please Me" rocketed to number one, the Beatles rushed to deliver a debut album, bashing out Please Please Me in a day. Decades after its release, the album still sounds fresh, precisely because of its intense origins. As the songs rush past, it's easy to get wrapped up in the sound of the record itself without realizing how the album effectively summarizes the band's eclectic influences.
Naturally, the influences shine through their covers, all of which are unconventional and illustrate the group's superior taste. There's a love of girl groups, vocal harmonies, sophisticated popcraft, schmaltz, R&B, and hard-driving rock & roll, which is enough to make Please Please Me impressive, but what makes it astonishing is how these elements converge in the originals. "I Saw Here Standing There" is one of their best rockers, yet it has surprising harmonies and melodic progressions. "Misery" and "There's a Place" grow out of the girl group tradition without being tied to it.
A few of their originals, such as "Do You Want to Know a Secret" and the pleasantly light "P.S. I Love You," have dated slightly, but endearingly so, since they're infused with cheerful innocence and enthusiasm. And there is an innocence to Please Please Me. the Beatles may have played notoriously rough dives in Hamburg, but the only way you could tell that on their first album was how the constant gigging turned the group into a tight, professional band that could run through their set list at the drop of a hat with boundless energy.
It's no surprise that Lennon had shouted himself hoarse by the end of the session, barely getting through "Twist and Shout," the most famous single take in rock history. He simply got caught up in the music, just like generations of listeners did.
