THE CLASH: White Man In Hammersmith Palais/The Prisoner (1978 UK CBS 6383 DEMO 45)
For auction an impossibly rare DEMO first pressing copy, with different labels, of possibly the greatest Clash single of them all. This would have been among the first few copies shipped out to the music industry ahead of the official release. So early a copy in fact that the famous custom labels on the record, as made available to the public, had not been yet printed and all the information about the disc is on a standard CBS label including the words "PROMOTIONAL COPY NOT FOR RESALE" and the proposed release date stated as 16th June 1978.
The famous pointed gun pop art is there on one side but without any text - not even title or band name. Just a catalogue number and a large A indicating that this is an advance industry demo. This was not how this record appeared in the shops.
The vinyl is in true VG+ condition, some hairlines that do not effect play though there is one short scratch at the beginning of White Man. This clicks a couple of times but there is nothing disastrous and certainly no jumps. All in all in pretty good shape for a magnificent noise, the definitive howl of punk, now over 43 years old.
The CBS labels - unique to this promo copy - are clean and bright, two very small patches of wear against the orange, but otherwise vibrant and bold and free from writing, dirt or stickers. It comes with its famous original bright pink birth bag, customised for release with band name and label number.
Included in any self respecting list of the greatest singles ever and ALWAYS in the top ten of Punk, this is as early a copy of The Clash's greatest moment as you can find. A super rare chance to own a real piece of punk history.
