THE DAVID was actually a pseudonym for, or more probably a side project of, the members of the Los Angeles-based ensemble BREAD. Members included David Gates (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, violin, viola, percussion), James Griffin (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion) and Robb Royer (bass, guitar, flute, keyboards, percussion, recorder, backing vocals).
"Light Of Your Mind" b/w "Please Mr. Policeman", from 1969, was The David's one and only release. "Light of Your Mind" has been compiled on both the Rubble series and 'Acid Drops, Spacedust & Flying Saucers: Psychedelic Confectionary From The U.K. Underground 1965-1969' CD set, which has given the band the false identity of being from England. The 45 was produced by Englishman Dru Harvey and was only issued in the UK, which further fuels the false perception that the group was British. On top of that, the record actually sounds quite British too, its vibe being a total contrast to the U.S. West Coast soft-rock sound of Bread. The flipside "Please Mr. Policeman" is an incredible slice of Hammond Organ-loaded psych.
