Label/Format: Elektra – the very first red format and this being as early as they almost get with the lowest stampers you are likely to ever seen as listed further down.

Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with only light, few and faint spindle marks.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 128 grams. A quite typical weight for this record.

Rarity: Scarce: the red format Elektra replaced the orange one for a relatively short time before the more familiar Butterfly design took over. This is a superb record of almost archive quality and one of the very first to hit the shops back in February 1970. Purchased within the first day or two by the one-and-only owner who played it very little. The cover clean and little worn and the sound is practically pristine. For fans of this legendary band, this will take some beating, such original examples are seldom seen.

Brief Info: This was The Doors fifth album and one of the very best within their supreme Morrison-era catalogue. After the mixed reviews for ‘The Soft Parade’, this saw the them switch to more bluesy material and has some quite stunning tracks. A richer, heavier sound and again, with a strong production, this also includes some truly memorable quieter tracks and certainly one of my favourites ever in ‘Indian Summer’, a song probably less known than many to the non-Doors fan, but this slow sensitive track exudes sheer beauty with Morrison as tender as he ever got. This solidly pressed and beautifully preserved first issue offers reference standard audiophile sound and will thrill fans of the ‘Lizard King’ and his band rarely sounded much better than this.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a very conservative grading for a cover that actually looks even better still. An unlaminated gatefold format with smooth matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill and, of course has the original EKS prefix and 75007 number. Beware of Kinney substitutions that look virtually the same.

Cover Front: Minimal wear at all with deep vibrant colour and freshness. Three spine edge creases tops the extra (+) grading with no others of any note. Any surface blemishes very few, fine and faint and no sticker marks. This difficult front will take some beating.

Cover Back: Even better if anything – the lack of grubbiness, rubbing or major creasing are all major positives, that along with no ring wear from which this cover so often suffers.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little short of as made with just one gentle surface crease seen under light.

Top Edges: Both straight with barely any wear at all.

Bottom Edges: The front has avoided wear, the back has a little light, patchy surface rubbing. These storage edges will seldom be seen with less.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and both guranteed untrimmed. A little light thickening or burr traces as seen more critically viewed end-on. Record entered on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Quite solid, straight, minimal compression and folded very square and all the edges meet up flush and neat which makes quite a difference to attractiveness. A couple of just off-centre creases but the surface and folds have avoided rutting, and all text is perfect and unworn which is a big bonus on these type of covers, again seen on the spine pictures.

Corners: Small tip rubs, little on the spine ones with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this fragile and quite scarce early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive original Doors sleeve should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the Polydor style lined inner has lightly darkened with age but has minimal traces of any creasing, no edge splits and two very crisp and undamaged window circles. .

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / (++) an impressive clean visual copy that retains fine shine and freshness. Any surface trace marks are very few, fine and faint, hardly any at all on side two and sound quality is top-drawer throughout. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This well preserved and little used record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is of studio quality with the precision and detail of the master tape – wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted. Even the quieter songs gave of their very best and this is a genuine first issue that is highly likely to need upgrading. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this one. Both channels are clean and sharp, generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better as an EKS original and merits my highest possible recommendation – do not lose this one.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
