Label/Format: Transatlantic – original purple and white format with textured surfaces. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with any spindle marks very light and barely visible. Always nice to see these lovely old labels so snowy white and avoiding grubbiness. Yes, another from that collection of barely played records. A perfect partner for the ‘Tenderness Junction’ I am also currently offering.

Cat Number: TRA 181.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Scarce: both Transatlantic albums, probably the only label that would take them on at this time, are elusive and seldom seen. Rare in these conditions either. Most who bought these were of a certain type and rarely hi-fi buffs. Well this was an exception to the rule.

Brief Info: Transatlantic was better known for its folk acts but the signing of the New York hippie underground act The Fugs were amongst its most controversial ever. They made just two original albums for the label and this was the second. The total lack of commercial potential meant their earliest US albums were not issued in the UK until later. Initially a band of beatnik poets with very limited musical talent, they made music like no others at this time and many considered them outlandish and obscene. The band’s name was ‘borrowed’ from the euphemistic substitute for the word ‘f**k’, that was used in Norman Mailer’s book The Naked and the Dead. The Fugs were all about satire and performed at protests against the Vietnam War nationwide. They used uncompromising lyrics about sex, drugs, and politics which caused hostile reactions from many quarters. Transatlantic’s decision to sign them was a brave one, sales would have been predictably small and so it proved. Finding either of the two original ‘Trans’ albums is very difficult, and finding both in such super conditions from the same collection is almost remarkable. This is an exceptional original with both record and cover in superb conditions. For those seeking them out, a rare opportunity.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-). This is laminated front and back and the front is made with single thickness card. The inside left face is bare card which is highly unusual and possibly unique for a gatefold cover. The inside has two external flipbacks at the top and bottom. It was printed and made in England by West Brothers Ltd.

Lamination – Front & Back: I have never seen one that even comes close to this. The laminate is clean, fresh and very clear with hardly any traces of friction rubs or dulling. All fully adhered and devoid of the usual creases the front especially attracts being so thin. The artwork is so ‘Mothers’ and will rarely be seen better. The back is incredibly still so white and the front vibrant and colourful. One time has largely overlooked and one to delight the serious collector.

Cover Inner Gatefold: I state again, the left side is bare card with no picture or text at all - highly unusual to say the least - it remains as new. The right side is more conventional with text and illustrations and some selective lyrics. This looks like new and is incredibly white and unworn. Both flipbacks are totally undamaged and again look new. The record enters via the centrefold, so to state the centrefold and entrance area is also unworn or damaged is almost miraculous. If anyone h as a better example of this cover, well I sure would like to see it.

Top Edges: Barely any traces of wear at all – with even the thin front edge being crisp and very sharp with no feathering, burring or thickening.

Bottom Edges: Practically the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The back edge is closed as the record enters from the centrefold. Both again unworn with the front being crisp and ultra sharp (and guaranteed, untrimmed).

Corners: Barely any noteworthy wear to any and all retain super shape.

Cover Summary: Possibly the greatest example of this elusive Transatlantic cover you will ever wish to find. It will delight just about all collectors I feel sure.

The Inner: The plain white unlined inner is included too. It has the ‘Patents pending’ text. Some creasing but no splits.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) with any ultra fine surface trace blemishes being minuscule and superficial. Just the tiniest traces that just catch correctly angled light. A fantastic visual copy for a 41-year-old ‘underground’ record. Ultra clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy barely even played on all the evidence, I would be confident many of these will be horribly mark and scratched with awful sound quality to match. This is little short of as new and visually a superb record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Transatlantic record plays up too its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, clear sound and a fine recording too. Side one is musically more ‘conventional’ with vocal and backing, side two is far more obscure as the multitude of strange song titles may suggest. Nothing spoilt the listening experience and most collectors will enjoy this one – that is if The Fugs are for you – pop music they are not. Few examples will outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Few would have shelled out to buy this album that I am very sure, the guides really do not really portray its rarity. As stated, this band or album had little commercial potential. A record in this outstanding all round condition deserves the highest recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
