Label/Format: Straight – original matt surfaces with a gentle trace of texturing.

Label and Condition: As seen on side one, a very small and ultimately neat name around the 3 o’clock position of the label rim. That apart, little else to fault, with any spindle traces minuscule, the surfaces, very clean and fresh. This was my own personal copy for around 8 years – it took me that long to find a worthwhile upgrade as this has always been a difficult album to find as a UK copy in better conditions.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 157 grams. This an exceptional weight for a Straight album, and the same for any record for that matter. Some Straight albums were pressed quite thin, especially the American versions and rarely will this weight be held for this short-lived label.

Country of Manufacture: England

Rarity: Rare, make no mistake, most that surface are US copies. UK examples are difficult to find and these never included the book which is unique to the original US pressing (but that is rare and elusive). Notoriously difficult to find in decent condition as well, the cover prone to all forms of wear, and this one is far from perfect. However, the record, apart from a few light ticks on side two, is superb, and very well pressed, which again, is not always the case. Few but the curious would have bought this one.

Label Notes: Straight and Bizarre, were labels founded by Frank Zappa for artists that were a little different with little commercial potential. They were given freedom to record what they wanted without constraints and pressures of sales. Most were uncommercial and selling in predictably small numbers. One or two exceptions apart (Captain Beefheart and Alice Cooper), most were ignored or unnoticed, and quickly deleted as the label folded in 1970.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the most essential of the Zappa related artists album to own – it’s a magnificent somewhat ‘out-there’ album – a shame it’s relatively short one-off. One of the rarest UK albums on Frank Zappa’s Straight label, this would have probably sold only a handful of copies back in the late 1960s. Frank Zappa produces and appears, along with Jeff Beck, early Mothers of Invention memebers – Jimmy Carl Black; Roy Estrada; Ian Underwood and Don Preston. A collection of original psych, quirky songs with really surreal moments of dialogue. Mixed with groupie culture dialogue – check out the songs titles above to get some idea of what to expect. The dialogue is at times very amusing, young sweaty schoolgirls encountering a ‘dyke’ gym-teacher. A guy asks how much to j*** off when viewing the ladies in stockings – I think you get the picture – outrageous by name and by nature – it’s real case of “They Don’t Make ’em Like That Anymore’’. So who were the GTO’s?

An all-female group, initially known as the Laurel Canyon Ballet Company, alongside the notorious Plaster Casters (with reference on this album), the best-known members of the 1960s groupie sub-culture. After a time, each member abandoned her respective surname and became Miss Lucy, Miss Pamela, Miss Christine (died 5 November 1972, appeared on the cover of Zappa’s masterpiece Hot Rats), Miss Sparky, Miss Mercy, Miss Sandra (heavily pregnant when this cover was made) and Miss Cinderella. The seven members moved to Zappa’s home when Miss Christine became governess to his daughter Moon Unit, and they occasionally performed live with the Mothers of Invention. Zappa produced the bulk of this album and Lowell George (briefly with the Mothers and then founding Little Feat) was credited to two tracks. The album almost never made release at all when Misses Mercy, Cynderella and Sparky were arrested on drug related charges. The seven disbanded soon after and went their own ways. This album is obviously rare, the UK version especially so, most early albums on Straight are. Few had any commercial potential and this is no exception. This is entertainment from a bygone crazy era and totally unique. For any collector of the weird, strange and bizarre, but above all else – unique – this is a fine example, the record especially. No one else but Zappa would have given them a chance to record nothing else I have heard is anything quite like this. A very rare opportunity to explore the wonderful world of the GTO’s and the groupie culture of the time.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: or around that. This mainly due to a pull mark that had been filled in green – quite why I do not know – but this apart, a very respectable example of a very wear-prone cover. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A quite thin pull mark around 1.5 inches long filled in green, so a piece of permanent damage meaning this will not be for purists. But this is a rare cover and seldom seen in really top conditions, indeed, it took me a long time to fine one in excellent condition, so this is now available. The mark apart, this unforgiving front has little else of note to fault. Still quite clean with minimal rubbing, creasing and no light fading for which this is massive prone.

Cover Back: Even more prone to wear and fading than the front. Although there is some relatively mild rim impression, there is little actual ring wear as such. These are more often seen with deep, penetrating ring wear with substantial ink erosion which this has largely avoided. Only a few spine edge creases and corner tip rubs and not a great deal else. The girl on the back is Miss Christine (seen in close-up) and her chilling back text.

Cover Gatefold Inner: Magnificent with little to fault, any ageing minimal. These girls were pretty ‘out-there’ and wierd – check out the centrefold pictures in close-up – at the time, arguably the world’s most infamous groupies. Testament to those crazy times again – Frank marketed these girls perfectly, these cover types will never be seen again and if they did, who could take them seriously when its all be done before here? The inside text dedicates the album to Miss Pamela; Jimmy Page; The Flying Burrito Brothers and Jesus.

Top Edges: Straight and flat with minimal patchy rubbing, folded a little off-square, so they are not parallel.

Bottom Edges: The front edge has hardly any wear at all. The back has moderate patchy rubbing, these again not parallel, so the back is lower than the front towards the right, thus being the resting storage edge for this cover.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with minimal thickening or wear. Record enters on the back, all are untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid and straight with some compression. The top fold nearer the top has rubbed around three inches, but the text has almost survived intact and still easy to read. There is little other rubbing to the deep purple coloured spine, but the rub is significant.

Corners: Fairly light to moderate corner rubbing with fine, some nearer very fine shape retained. No major knocks, any dinking light.

Cover Summary: A wonderful, bizarre, even surreal cover that sums up these crazy chicks better than my words ever could – well worth a second look. Quite a rare one, so no qualms in offering one in this condition. The front cover pull and spine rub the only really significant issues. I was happy to own it myself, so hopefully it will please other collectors as well, but not for the purists.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a basic solid unlined white inner with one corner crease, and lesser elsewhere. The paper a little darkened with age but all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or thereabouts. Clean playing surfaces with fine shine and quite heavily pressed. Under my bright grading lamp, only fine, wispy surface marks, just one very fine stylus mark omits a small few very light ticks on side two, but this apart, the record plays impressively well. Remember this has considerable dialogue amongst the music, so ‘silence’ will always prove very difficult. Few who bought this were hi-fi connoisseurs, so few of these what surface will ever be pristine. But this has suffered no abuse or major mistreatments, okay, one very small stylus mark, but even this is not easily seen and any audio consequence is gentle, brief and quite faint. Also on close inspection under light, there does appear impurity within the vinyl in manufacture, but glad to state, this has no detrimental affect on the play or sound quality of this quite bizarre record. Overall, this is an impressive copy and will never prove easy to find a great deal better. Visually, this should please many collectors, I was more than happy to own this myself.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality: A record that plays very well, the few light clicks apart, this challenging record is impressive. Clean sound with minimal unwanted other sounds and no distortion or sound degrading. Consider its vintage and what it could have been subjected to. Heavy tracking pile-driver stylus and very heavy weighted tone-arms, that was largely the norm back then. The detail from the musical tracks are superb with a real psych feel, another triumph for Zappa. Of course the appearance of the Mothers of Invention makes this an essential item for any Zappa collector. A challenging recording with quiet passages and dialogue, a top pressing and lightly played record is essential for maximum pleasure, overall, this one delivers. Not pristine, so not for purists again, but for material like this, the odd blemish seems to matter less (in my opinion), it should please many fans and collectors of the bizarre.

End Piece: One of the most original ‘one-off’ albums you will ever hear – it sums up that crazy band/groupie scene of the late 1960s/early 70s perfectly. A strange, bizarre and totally off-the-wall album as you will ever wish to hear – along with An Evening With Wild Man Fischer this has to be included in any serious Frank Zappa collection. For years out-of-print and only occasionally available on CD. This original UK vinyl record will not surface often. Not a perfect copy, few ever will be, but still a fine example, the record, the very few light and equally brief clicks apart, plays very well indeed. To conclude this advert I quote from the from the booklet that only came with American copies – it’s a short preface written by Zappa: “The GTO’s write all their own lyrics and no subject matter covered by these lyrics was suggested by any outside source. The choice of subjects is a reflection of the girls’ own attitudes toward their environment. The GTO’s hope you like their album’’ – well I do and I hope the winning bidder enjoys it as well. Truly original and unique, there has never been anything else quite like the GTOs – these were as outrageous as it ever got way back then.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
