Label/Format: Parlophone with matt surfaces, these have a gentle hint of texturing. All text detail as clearly seen on my pictures. Side two has the ‘K T’ embossed tax codes, both letters are pristine as made.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive labels with only a small few, mostly light spindle marks.

Brief Info: Dating way back to January 1964, this was The Hollies first long-playing album. After the early success of The Beatles, they were also quickly signed to Parlophone and went on to be one of the most successful bands of the 1960s and beyond. Their superb harmony vocal and catchy popular style fast gained them a big audience and launched a very successful career for Graham Nash in particular. This a very fine example, these never easy to find. One to please many collectors of classic early British pop and beat.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with the front laminated. This covers all folds and ends on the back three external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text. The vintage polylined inner sleeve is also included.

Lamination & Front: A very nice looking front that only gives scant clues to its considerable age. The laminate retains very fine shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and minimal dulling – gentle traces seen under light on the rim area. A little tip rubbing and a small edge rub on the top right on the exposed strip where the laminate ends. A small, but moderate crease on the bottom edge towards the right, very few others, any being very fine and faint with hardly any away from the edges at all. The early band picture looks impressive, any marks or blemishes to the laminate few, very light and faint.

Cover Back: Generally clean and still fresh, any discolouration to the unprotected main back panel being little and very light, this mostly near the left edge. Minimal creasing and few marks, this has fared well. All flipbacks are neat and solid with few creases. A moderately fine one on the spine near the top being the most significant. All ends sharp and unburred and also devoid of the usual grime. So a very fine back to complement the impressive front.

Top Edge: Smooth and mostly straight with barely any wear up to the right tip that has rubbed.

Bottom Edge: A tiny few ultra fine hairlines apart, little else to fault.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Generally neat, the back sharper than the front as this is slightly shorter in the manufacture. This has a more ‘rustic’ trim in manufacture, not all card was razor-sharp, any thickening quite light. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine with little at all to fault. Solid, white with barely any hint of compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, the surface still smooth with no peeling.

Corners: Quite light to moderate tip rubbing on the right pair, less on the spine ends. Fine to very fine shape retained without bashes, any evidence of dinking tiny and light.

Cover Summary: Few covers of this age will not have some minor blemishes or gentle wear. So this in context has fared very well and remains very attractive as seen, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(++): mainly marked down for corner creasing as seen. Still intact with neat window circles and clear polylining. Gentle paper discolouration, all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. Modestly played with general care on evidence, there are no penetrating stylus scratches, but under my bright grading lamp, fine and wispy surface marks are seen that are totally harmless. Visually an impressive mono record of age that should please many collectors, but not for purists who only want ‘perfect’ at any cost.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This popular early beat-pop classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, clear sound, audio quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain this record has been played modestly, and with due care – the fine surface marks seen under light almost certainly from dry cleaning cloths that were recommended at the time. Generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality record. Such records were not really designed to be played on clinical stereo equipment, but this is easily up to the task. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended unless perfection is mandatory.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
