Label Conditions: Both still fresh, very clean and attractive with spindle marks less than moderate, indeed side one has very few and show little. The record itself has a few superificial surface marks, but plays beautifully with hardly anything unwanted, this was a genuine pleasure to play-grade.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 170 grams. A massive weight even by Pye standards, a record made in the era of quality.

Rarity: Quite rare: and personally, I consider the stereo version rarer than the mono. This still issued in the ‘mono era’ and still the choice of the majority. With many a classic from this year overlooked by ‘Peppermania’, this was somewhat overshadowed. Not seen or had many stereo originals before and this record does it superb justice with lovely clean audio quality.

Brief Info: One of the UK’s greatest music treasures, this album is up there with the very best popular albums of all-time. Brilliant songs and their sound had now progressed beyond pure RnB. Ray Davies writes most of the thirteen songs on offer with his brother Dave writing two – the classic ‘Death of a Clown’ was co-written. Ray especially in the 1960s, wrote some of the most brilliant songs of this famous decade. Catchy tunes with superb lyrics, but their albums did not sell in the numbers they should have done. Although the singles still did well, the albums declined which is mystifying as they simply got better and better and better. This is a rare record, especially in stereo, and now commands a realistic high catalogue price, it’s very difficult to find lightly played. Tired, dull looking vinyl often with deep scratches and bad sound is almost the norm for such pieces. This one appears far more modestly played, but does have a few marks. However, they are purely surface scuffs, not stylus scratches, so they have no sound at all, they being the most important factor. The songs plays focused, clear and quiet with lovely stereo separation and mix, it was a pure joy to play. With ‘Peppermania’ sweeping the country, masterpieces of this type were largely overlooked, in my humble opinion, I consider this album in no way inferior to that far more famous title. In terms of rarity, well Pepper would have sold several thousand to just one of these. Hardly any wonder these are getting so hard to find. It did briefly peak at 35 in the UK albums charts, a lowly effort for such a beautiful album and fared even worse in the United States with a miserly high of 153. Maybe the change of direction from beat to art-pop was not what their early fans wanted. Only as the years passed have these classic Kinks albums been so cherished and highly sort-after, few survive in better conditions with many trashed or even written-off. Viewing and hearing this early stereo issue is a privilege not to be taken lightly. A record that plays with NO distortion, pressing noises or surface sound worthy of mention, the music all focused and sharp with no clipping to the high frequencies. Remember, one jolt or needle drop from a Dansette or similar old record player that tracked at massive weights could have destroyed this or any similar record, and be assured, many stereo copies were still subjected to harsh treatment. All this and including a very attractive, little-worn cover as well, that almost as challenging as the record itself, it even still includes its stereo sticker on the back to mask the mono prefix. Pop nostalgia never gets better than The Kinks and this is one of their very best ever – the timeless ‘Waterloo Sunset’ brings this perfect album to the perfect end.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces, this being more unusual for the time and most of the Kinks 1960s albums were laminated. It has three large rear external flipbacks which were always prone to damage and wear. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and has the ‘Patents pending’ text. The mono prefix is covered with with original STEREO NSPL white sticker on the back. A Pye lined promotional inner sleeve is included.

Cover Front: For those who know this cover well, most will it does not age or tolerate bad storage or heavy handling well. The silver-grey surface rubs very easily and will rarely be found devoid of some wear. This front has little with any rubbing minimal and very light. A little to the corner tips and just traces on the main surface, the actual graphic of the band and title looks fantastic and nigh-on perfect. A few gentle creases show little, this is a front that gives only the most gentle hints of age and will not prove easy to find much better these days.

Cover Back: The back is even more perilous, with three large flipbacks that so often get badly damaged. Rarely have I seen the main back panel look better, this has little to fault at all. The sticker has aged a little with a hint of transparency, which is normal for these, but is solidly attached and appears never removed, these are so often missing altogether on the stereo copies. All the flipbacks are in super shape, a minor semi-crease to the top right end, this being critical. All are solid and very neat indeed, lacking the usual burring, creasing and damage many acquire over time. The odd small tip crease and rub apart, they also will not prove easy to find better. Both front and back of this difficult unprotected cover are impressive.

Top Edge: Straight with any rubbing light and patchy.

Bottom Edge: Similar to above with a fraction more rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp given the age and thick record inside. A little thickening seen viewed end-on, but few will avoid this as a bare minimum. Record enters on this edge that (like indeed every element and aspect of this cover) has no enhancements or trimming.

Spine and Text: Solid and still mainly straight with minimal compression, the ends gently tapered in manufacture. A small chip and a little gentle rubbing near the bottom end, again few will show less. Crucially, all text is pristine and unworn which I consider a massive plus.

Corners: Moderate corner rubs but fine to very fine shape is retained with any dinks gentle and light.

Cover Summary: Do not underestimate how wear-prone this cover is, it is rarely seen in top conditions, this is considerably above average and as my pictures hopefully show, this is still a very attractive example with little really to fault. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): this a very attractive Pye lined promotional inner sleeve. One edge split I neatly repaired to stop it potentially widening in future, it hardly registers. Clean and little aged at all with minimal creasing or discolouration. This is the inner that was with the record when I got it, I cannot say with certainty if its original as I have in the past had this album with plain white inners, this may well be an earlier type.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(–): and this grading does not do this lovely record full justice. These gradings due to a few surface scuffs that have NO sound. The record actually plays a full grade better to almost as good as they get, this being the crucial factor. Still an impressive looking record and heavily pressed record with clean, shiny surfaces. These vintage Pye pressings were usually of vast weight and were tough and resilient with deeper grooves. Hence any marks often have little or no consequences – these scuffs have no audio issues. Simply compare to most seen nowadays, many trashed putting it as simply as possible, this is light years from that sorryful state, this is a truly lovely record, and if relatively minor visual imperfections are acceptable, and audio quality is of paramount importance, this delivers and will please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful Kinks classic plays probably a full grading rung above its still impressive visual with very little to fault at all. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, never, ever take this for granted on any older record whether mono or stereo. All frequencies are sharp, focused and clear with barely any hint of crackle or clipping. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound that images beautifully. A very clean pressing with no manufacture or tracking issues*, deep grooves and all the detail and warmth only original vinyl truly has to offer. What a joy to hear this monumental classic so clean, this was a real pleasure from start to finish. Offering few clues to age, nothing beats hearing these gems as they were manufactured without modern tweaking and tampering of the wonderful original production. Has any album ended with a better or more beautiful song than the sublime ‘Waterloo Sunset’? – even the more difficult innermost tracks play as cleanly as the outer ones. Few examples these days will match or outperform this very early stereo pressing I feel sure - and early is the word for this - actually purchased within the year of issue, check out above those incredibly early first mothers and stamper codes. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this true classic. Neither cover or record are visually ‘perfect’, but how many survive that truly are? All elements of this set are considerably above average and sound exceptional. This should please many, if not most collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
