Label/Format: Verve – genuine first press issue format with SVLP 9239 catalogue number and matt textured surfaces. This a rare factory sample, the sticker seen on side two.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Rarity: Scarce as a first pressing, this was no major seller, especially when first issued in 1969. This was only available for a brief time and was the final ‘Mothers’ album issued with a SVLP prefix. This was quickly repressed in the early 1970s making first issues scarce and elusive. The Select Verve repressings are still regularly mistakingly offered as first issues or originals.

Brief Info: The first Frank Zappa authorised compilation of early Mothers of Invention tracks, all taken from their first three albums – the title a likely sarcastic play on ‘Beatlemania’. Fans looking at the track listing and the text on the back cover will think there is nothing new on offer from this collection. But not so. Several songs include new edits and mixes. The main ones being: ‘Mother People’ now includes the removed verse that includes “Shut your f***ing mouth about the length of my hair” which now makes this original song fully intact with no censoring at all. ‘The Idiot Bastard Son’ is a unique mono version with a totally different mix which makes it sound far more psychedelic. To my knowledge, this version is unavailable on any other album. ‘It Can’t Happen Here’ now includes Zappa’s reference “since you first took the shots” (a drugs related phrase spoken to Suzy Creamcheese). This line was removed from the final mix of Freak Out! Other original mixes are more subtle from ‘Freak Out’ and ‘We’re Only in it For the Money’, the songs from ‘Absolutely Free’ are the originals apart from ‘Call Any Vegetable’ that is shortened. It includes as seen, a superb full colour picture of the full early band, and only first issues were laminated which makes it look way better. This record appears hardly played and is a rare factory sample. Most plays superbly well, but there are a couple of moderate very brief crackles within the pressing on ‘The Idiot Bastard Son’ which I have seldom not heard on first pressings. Indeed my own near mint copy has traces of them in the same places, just not quite as noticeable as on this copy. So this a pressing issue that seems affects a high percentage of originals. I consider this one of the rarest original Mothers Verve originals and it seldom surfaces in anything like decent condition when it does.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. A single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on three rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: An impressive front, the only clue to its 50-years-of-age is some darkening of the right laminate end strip on the fine exposed card, again this is rarely avoided on this cover. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with any dulling around the rim area gentle and light seen under light. No lifting, any creasing also few and mainly light. Little detracts from this classic picture of the early Zappa band – this the line up that made The Mothers of Invention masterpiece ‘We’re Only in it For the Money’. For most looking at this bizarre bunch of musicians, it’s no real surprise this failed to sell.

Cover Back: The main matt back panel has only gentle traces of any grubbiness to offer scant hint of age. No rubbing, creasing, sticker issues or writing. All three flipbacks are solid, neat and lacking the usual grubbiness or burring to their ends. One small surface chip on the bottom one and a light scuff to the top one near the centre, being white, this registers little. A cover that has been well looked after, and being honest, most who bought these vintage underground psych albums, few were hi-fi connoisseurs, hence most copies of this and other similiar albums are trashed, putting a fine looking copy like this in real perspective.

Top Edge: Straight, very smooth and barely worn at all up to the very right corner tip that has a minute rub trace.

Bottom Edge: Superb, very close to as-made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Still fairly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine that has barely anything at all to fault. Solid, straight with barely any compression, the ends are gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, a little discolouration on the exposed card of the right pair. Very fine shape retained with no heavy knocks, any evidence of dinks, tiny and light.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this rare late 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better – these originals seldom surface this nice. This essential compilation album cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner with little to fault bar a sticker residue mark on one side. Generally clean with hardly any creasing and all edges solidly intact with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and heavily pressed – subsequent repressings were much thinner. A copy with modestly light plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, wispy, fine and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This unique mix and edit compilation album plays mostly, even above it’s high visual grading with little else to fault bar a couple of moderate crackles towards the end of the first side – these come and go in an instant. Sound quality is very high apart with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any other unwanted sounds are minimal indeed and has no tracking issues*. As stated above, I have barely heard any copies without these pressing sounds on ‘The Idiot Bastard Son’, without doubt this is a pressing issue inherent on many, if not most first issues. I feel sure this record has been played lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, certainly compared to most originals that show up. Those couple of ultra brief crackles apart, nothing else spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusive first pressed record. It will still prove difficult to find significantly better and can be recommended unless absolute perfection is mandatory. I am quite convinced few first UK issues of this album will not have the odd pressing flaw as the barest minimum.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
