Description: Really nice copy of the second lp by The Pop Group, includes the huge newspaper insert. Everything is in beautiful condition, obviously well taken care of!

"The Pop Group were a Bristol band in the late 1970s and early '80s. Their style is hard to pigeonhole, but there are three genres which are sufficient (assuming you have prior knowledge of those genres) to give a general sense of the band's sound: post-punk, funk, and no wave. None of these descriptors, however, can quite prepare one for the aural and sonic assault that the Pop Group lays on their listeners.

Typical of the early post-punk era (see also Pere Ubu, Gang of Four, and others), the recordings give the impression of a hollow enclosure in which the sound just vibrates around you. As the early punk pioneers were political in nature, the recording style lends itself to claustrophobic feelings rather easily. Despite the collectivistic solidarity which the Pop Group no doubt wished to express, after hearing either their debut, Y, or its successor, For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder?, both make me feel supremely isolated. The lyrics are, if that second LP's title didn't give it away, quite harsh. In one track, Mark Stewart screams, far away from the microphone, "Nixon and Kissinger should be tried for war crimes", his plodding enunciation creating a vision of a wide-eyed man at the peak of his oratory, a fire around him.

And yet, for all the intensity of the lyrics, and the inert obsession the production inspires, the music itself is positively funky. On Y, the song "We Are Time" has an addicting if off-kilter groove that propels the rhythm forward for six full minutes. On "Communicate", from their second LP, the bass is bound up in some hard funk, seemingly unable to relent, spilling slapdash all over the mix.

It's a shame the band isn't all that well-known today. Gang of Four have maintained a remarkable degree of popularity in playing much the same style. Other bands like XTC and Pere Ubu have had more lasting fame. The Pop Group, thanks to Y, is my favorite of the bunch. Y is a monster of an album, a 45-minute masterpiece. For How Much Longer is a brilliant, syncopated album, and is as dense as Y; it falls short of the former, I think, because it is less experimental.

The Pop Group disbanded in 1981, after only a couple years. They put out two great albums. Supposedly, there was going to be a reunion album in 2010, but I never heard much after the initial press release. Even if it doesn't come out, the band deserves more fame." - rateyourmusic

GRADING:

NEAR MINT (NM): Like new.

EXCELLENT (EX): Otherwise NM but has slight cosmetic flaws that don't affect play. Close to perfect, with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident. The cover might have light wear or a dented corner, but should look close to new.

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+): The record has been handled and played infrequently or very carefully - there may be light marks that don't affect play, or some of the original luster may be lost. The cover will have light wear, but will still look & feel solid.

VERY GOOD (VG): Record displays visible signs of handling and playing, such as loss of vinyl luster, light surface scratches, groove wear and spindle trails. Some audible surface noise. Cover may have moderate to heavy ring wear, seam splits, bent corners, loss of gloss, stains. A VG grade doesn't mean the album is trashed; it will still play well enough to be enjoyable.

VERY GOOD MINUS (VG-): The record may have numerous scratches including heavy scratches that will tick, moderate to heavy surface noise. The cover might have large seam splits, tears, or writing on the cover that obscures the artwork. I usually don't list records in this condition unless it is an extremely rare title.
