Label/Format: Decca – original unboxed red mono format with matt, smooth surfaces and deep ring ridge.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. In terms of early Rolling Stones records, very few spindle marks and finding one with less will be hard. The small few present are a little long but mostly quite fine with only modest visibility with normal full-on viewing.

Cat Number: LK 4852.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. A very good and typical weight for this Decca record.

Rarity: Moderate in theory: all Rolling Stones albums sold well but it’s the conditions that make the difference. Many played to destruction, often at parties on very basic crude record players. We have all seen such worn-out and badly scratched examples that now offer terrible, often totally unlistenable sound. This vintage mono record has little more than fine and faint surface marks and light years off the aforementioned. It has a very fine cover, inner and record that plays very well indeed with not a great deal unwanted. This also on very sensitive equipment for which this mono record was not really designed. Early unboxed copies in the more perilous mono mode are far harder to find as such.

Brief Info: Most interested collectors will know all about this title already and needs no introductions suffice to say, it was their fifth UK album from 1967. A more gentle album before the the psychedelia that was to follow next. Possibly a less-lauded album than some from their classic Decca years, but a lovely record in it’s own right. This a lovely copy, not pristine, but compared to most seen around, impressive, these are far harder to find for sure, especially with a prized ‘1 B’ mother/stamper. As many collectors will know, ‘B’ is the first in the Decca pressing sequence.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with a Clarifoil laminated front that wraps around all the closed edges and ends on the spine edge of the back. This the original format with NO mono/stereo hole indicator, those came later in 1969. Printed and made in England by James Upton Ltd and includes the Decca blue-text polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: An age-defying front that looks lovely with few blemishes. Clarifoil on typically thin card of the era usually means issues of which this has very few and little. It retains a fine shine, freshness and clarity and devoid of the lifting many are seen with. This laminate in particular has the habit of shrinkage which means either bowing or lifting – this has avoided both. Any dulling is very light and faint as seen more critically under angled light and any rim impression very faint indeed. One very fine thumb semi-crease near the right edge again only shows if light catches it right, and just one very small laminate crease on the bottom left corner. Any others are ultra fine and faint edge types that are hardly worthy of special mention and few will avoid as a bare minimum. Just a little darkening to the very left corner tips and that is about it in terms of ‘ageing’ on what is a very impressive looking front. The artwork seen to near maximum advantage and retaining deep, rich colour.

Cover Back: The most delicate of all Stones Decca backs with large areas of exposed white, most are seen in terrible grubby and tired conditions, even the slightly later ones. This has has very little to fault with any discolouration mild and light around the very edges. No ringwear or rubbing and just a tiny crease on the bottom right corner tip. The laminate end on the spine edge neat with any grubbiness to the end-line very little and faint. So just enough to very gently remind of it’s considerable age, but with many seen more brown looking and stained than white, this back has withstood the years well.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both quite straight and not bowed, that quite unusual on these thinner edge types. Still with smooth laminate with little wear at all. Just a hint of thickening to the bottom card panel end from storage, this being rather critical, it is still very neat indeed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. The lack of burring or thickening always good news. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A very neat and straight spine that has little wear again. Just small darkening of the very ends tips. Solid, straight with any compression light. All text is perfect and unworn, centred a little high as it seems many are, all laminate solid and uncracked, even this retains excellent shine.

Corners: A little scuffing and darkening of the left pair, the right ones very neat and crisp. Mainly very fine or better shape being retained.

Cover Summary: A very impressive all-round example of this somewhat fragile cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: mainly due to some creasing and crinkle, but real wear light. A little darkening that few avoid with adhesive browning on the seams, it seems to just happen with age. The lining is solid and very clear with two very crisp window circles. All edges solid and unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. It has light surface marks/hairlines which are all non-penetrating and fine as seen under angled light. This vintage record has generally survived the ‘mono’ era well, and so few of these very popular classics ever do. I never offer Rolling Stones or Beatles albums lightly – heavily scratched and worn-out copies are very easy to find, but I have no interest in them whatsoever. When any marks are generally few and very fine and light, that has to be acceptable or these albums would rarely be offered at all. Also this plays well with little unwanted and visually a splendid record that should please many collectors, but not the absolute purists who want everything to look brand new. Let’s honest again, most who bought records did so to play them and most-all did just that.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This early Stones mono classic plays mostly even above its strong visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - that a crucially important factor. Sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. By now the Stones productions were getting more polished and this was just perfect for its vintage. Any surface sound little and light, traces on ‘Back Street Girl’, a quiet song, but not a great deal else. I remind I play all my records on a highly revealing Linn LP12 Sondek with Naim amp and very clinical speakers. Mono records were not really designed for such equipment but more suited to the Dansette era. But this record gave a very impressive account of itself and I enjoyed it a lot. Remember, just one arm drop and jolt, and there is another mono classic fit for the dustbin – we have all seen them. This plays without clicks and pressing noises and with only the odd gentle hint here and there it is a 46-year-old record being played – I have no qualms with that myself, it simply add authenticity to it’s sound and era. Few copies will outperform this one significantly I feel sure. A copy played a few times, but avoiding accidents that cause any audio issues. Nothing of any real spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It could prove difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended unless absolute audio perfection is mandatory. And good luck with that.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
