Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks tiny, very few and very faint. Being honest, finding it hard to find any of note at all. Side one has a small and light red ‘smudge’ just below the hole that can be seen on my scan, this I would be certain there from new.

Cat Number: COC 59100 [later pressings had the COC prefix changed to CUN].

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 147 grams. An extraordinary weight for this record, most COC early pressings I have had have been anything between 20 to 30 grams lighter than this (or less). A copy with a weight way over average and much better pressed as well. Rolling Stones Records were never the quality of Decca, but how many others ever were?

Country of Manufacture: Record & Insert: England. Cover: printed in Germany for the initial UK market.

Rarity: The title itself is moderate, but this early example is very different as it includes the first made much heavier style zip (as seen in close-up). Known as the ‘PAN’ zip as engraved into the distinctively round hole style puller part. The second issue zipper, is much smaller, around 60 per cent small in fact, and has a much different shape with two small rectangle openings. These original ‘PAN’ zips are far, far harder to find and often when they show are badly tarnished and often siezed-up with rust. This one has survived in almost supreme shape and easily unzips to full length as seen on my other close-up photographs. Also the very damage-prone buckle area is near perfect with any creasing light and faint and NO tears or repairs. Often the victim of protective inners that catch this delicate part. These Pan zipper covers were manufactured in Germany for the UK market, soon replaced and changed. I would presume the zipper style was replaced due to cost, these are not cheap lightweight zips like the replacement ones, these have plenty of real metal and looks fantastic. Other than this, all else is pretty much the same but note, the later copies had the catalogue number prefix changed from COC to CUN. So a rare original and at last one that plays well, these can be very disappointing as pressing quality is somewhat variable and never Decca quality. Also the cover could be the very best I have seen for some very considerable time.

Brief Info: The first album on the new Rolling Stones Record label and first to feature Mick Taylor as a full-time member replacing Brian Jones. A wonderful album including the ever-popular single ‘Brown Sugar’ with varied material, some quite dark. Famed for it’s zipper cover which was based on an idea by Andy Warhol and designed by Craig Braun, many regard it as the greatest album cover ever made. Inside the cover and beneath the zip lies a pair of white pants and text ‘Andy Warhol - this photograph may not be etc’ (as seen on close-up). Do not underestimate the rarity of the first ‘PAN’ zipper cover, they are highly sort after and unique to the UK market – ironically the cover was printed in Germany – and only for a relatively brief time before being changed. Still later copies omitted the zips altogether. This copy includes the insert that does have a mark, but the many positives, including a very clean sounding record and hugely impressive cover outweigh this small negative. I have yet to hear an absolutely ‘perfect’ copy of this record, and this is could possibly be my best yet.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear (Damage): Very High: the buckle part of the front especially is so often seen torn and even with pieces missing. The backs usually heavily indented by other zipper covers pressing against them, often badly marked even from new. Logic tells me, these were stacked in manufacture and pressed aside in boxes for distribution, thus few escape often severe marks and zip impression.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single unlaminated cover with a third ‘dividing’ sheet of card piece inside. Matt finished and in one includes the much rarer very large, heavyweight ‘PAN’ zipper. Printed in Germany for the UK market. Includes the insert sheet that was printed by Richard Davis Ltd.

Cover Front: One of the very best I have seen for some considerable time. Both front and back are so exposed to damage, marks, scuffs and impressions from all areas of the zip. This has few: a dulled surface scuff mark from the bottom zip end shows little and has NOT caused indentation and only shows under angled light and has NO ink removal. There is little else to fault around the zip area. Even more fragile and damage-prone is the cut buckle end. This is very crisp and incredibly neat with just a couple of very fine and light surface creases near their ends. No repairs with any thickening or burring almost minuscule. They hardly get much neater or better looking than this. The main cover area is clean, fresh and very attractive with hardly any other creases or marks to be seen other than mentioned already. Ultra fine traces near the zipper pull where it has simply moved around within it’s own distance, totally natural and normal and barely even visible.

The Zipper: The original and first-made ‘PAN’ heavyweight and large zipper is in SUPERB condition, and still works perfectly with little effort in moving up or down. Still very firmly attached inside via the cloth surround. This has barely aged at all, the overall lack of tarnish and rusting is almost unsurpassed and I have NOT enhanced or cleaned-up this zip in any way whatsoever. Of the few I have seen before, most have had some oxidation and often significant rusting, but somehow, this has practically avoided it altogether with only faint traces on the top (which my close-up picture actually over-emphasises). Totally unbent, the ‘PAN’ etching is still easily visible BOTH sides of the gripper. All the teeth parts are superb and totally unaged or blemished and all works perfectly. I have never seen one of these quite like it before, it has almost totally ignored it’s 40+ years-of-age – please see my close-ups of this remarkable working part of this famous cover.

Cover Back: The only blemish on what is an ultra clean back is a mild press and scuff that again aligned with the base of the zip. This shows little, only more under angled light. The usual area as the top has avoided any marks or damage and is one of the very few I have seen that has done so. This one near central mark apart, this superb back has little else to fault and will never prove easy to find better than this.

Cover Inner Sheet: From what I can see, this looks perfect with white pants and midriff artwork looking as made with text details mentioned above (as seen on my tricky taken photograph).

Top Edges: Minimal traces of any thickening or burring and NO tears or splits. The record enters on this top entrance and rarely is it seen much neater than this. One hundred percent guaranteed untrimmed with NO repairs.

Bottom Edge: Again neat with any rubbing very light and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: One tiny nick trace near the top, that apart (and blemishes hardly get smaller than this), almost as made.

Spine and Text: A truly superb spine: solid, straight with barely any compression, the ends are gently tapered in manufacture. A white surface with barely any rubbing and very clean. The ‘PRINTED IN GERMANY’ at the bottom is often eroded but here perfectly present and solid. In fact ALL the text is present with not even a hint of wear and I have never seen this delicate spine better.

Cover Summary: Not quite perfect, but will any version of this groundbreaking cover ever be? This is a very fine and importantly, attractive example of this early-made cover which is regarded by most as a ‘classic’. Lovely to offer the ‘PAN’ zip original too which is far rarer and less seen, also in such perfect working condition and so little worn. The zipper itself is unlikely to ever be beaten – a bold statement I know, but I have seen no other better. This elusive and sort-after item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the plain white, unlined solid inner has little wear at all but has mild discolour and toning. Any creasing very light and few, two crisp window circles and all edges mainly intact with just one very small edge split.

The Insert Sheet: VERY GOOD: not quite so easy to grade as there is just one mark. It appears a stain on Wyman’s lower jacket area has pulled the surface and little and made a mark, this is seen to a lesser degree on the ‘Tongue’ side. That apart, it is almost as made, so dropping two grades from Mint I feel is appropriate. These inners are not hard to find, certainly compared to the PAN zipper cover and a clean playing record. Clean, uncreased with very sharp and neat edges. The text side includes song credits and musicians, and if the production is not to your liking, simply ‘turn it up’. The one fairly small issue apart, this is very nice.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed at considerably over average. A 147 gram pressing of this record is almost unheard of with most more like 120 to 125 grams. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence – one small fine mark on side one has a few gentle ticks which are ultra brief and light. Side two has a few small pressing dulls purely within the pressing. These have emit a small few very light sporadic ticks which are largely lost within the sound. I consider such minor blemishes a huge positive as many of these often have loud crackle, pressing noises and even horrible loud distortions – and often on the cleanest looking copies you will find. These hidden nasties are all too apparent on this record and most collectors will know this. A very difficult one to find that will play well, this offers enjoyable and mostly clean sound and that never to be taken for granted. This will please many collectors, but those seeking absolute perfection, that I’m afraid is beyond difficult especially if it is to be played on more sensitive, high-end equipment.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark and classic album msotly plays above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Just those aforementioned very brief and light ticks but little else. A much cleaner than average pressing and is devoid of pressing noises and distortions. I feel sure this record was quickly manufactured to meet potential demand and quality control was a secondary concern. That said, this copy is much heavier than most and has little to fault. Just enough to remind you are listening to be very old record and how many will ever play with absolutely nothing unwanted?, especially this title with fine grooves and often very variable pressing quality. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, better enjoyed turned up a little. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and that is unusual too. Many I have heard have had inherent crackle and Rolling Stones Records pressings simply were not up to Decca standard. No pops were noted and given the facts, this is a very clean pressing, and compared to most I have heard, exceptional. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any real note, spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this evergreen classic. This copy overall, will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. The insert has the mark but the cover far less than usual and with no damages. The heavy-duty ‘PAN’ zipper is almost unbeatable and taken as a package, it merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
