INSERTS/EXTRAS RED & WHITE INNER About this time every year I go along to my secret hideway, bit like Superman, and rip open a crate and pull out a selection (usually) a run of a groups albums. This year its The Rolling Stones and their 60's Decca releases. These arent my "ultimate upgraders" they are locked away and I'm pretty sure some grandchild or other will get their sticky mits on them one day, but nice clean original copies mostly in EX+ condition. SLEEVE Front board.Inner gatefold EXCLEAN SLEEVE with NO rips tears stickers or remains: Front laminate is clean with LIGHT wear, picture is stuck fast. INNER GATEFOLD IS clean with LIGHT wear, has a small ink name at the centre of the maze.
Rear Board EX REAR board is clean and unmarked with shiny unworn laminate. Flipbacks N/A N/A Spine EX Spine is complete apart from about 1 inch of wear at the top. clear and near complete lettering Top & front edges VG Top & Bottom edges have SOME wear with card showing in places Opening EX Opening has light usage, and light wear Corners VG ALL Corners have wear, mostly at the top and bottom of the opening. INNER /EXTRASINNER SLEEVE: VERY GOOD- (complete but has loads of handling creasing, ragged around the opening, and fully taped around the edges, though I can't see much in the way of splitting, possibly for protection then. Record has been transferred to a seperate inner, and this is include for completeness only.)
DETAILSWithout a doubt, no Rolling Stones album -- and, indeed, very few rock albums from any era -- split critical opinion as much as the Rolling Stones' psychedelic outing. Many dismiss the record as sub-Sgt. Pepper posturing; others confess, if only in private, to a fascination with the album's inventive arrangements, which incorporated some African rhythms, Mellotrons, and full orchestration.
What's clear is that never before or after did the Stones take so many chances in the studio. (Some critics and fans feel that the record has been unfairly undervalued, partly because purists expect the Stones to constantly champion a blues 'n' raunch worldview.)
About half the material is very strong, particularly the glorious "She's a Rainbow," with its beautiful harmonies, piano, and strings; the riff-driven "Citadel"; the hazy, dreamlike "In Another Land," Bill Wyman's debut writing (and singing) credit on a Stones release; and the majestically dark and doomy cosmic rocker "2000 Light Years from Home," with some of the creepiest synthesizer effects (devised by Brian Jones) ever to grace a rock record.
The downfall of the album was caused by some weak songwriting on the lesser tracks, particularly the interminable psychedelic jam "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)." It's a much better record than most people give it credit for being, though, with a strong current of creeping uneasiness that undercuts the gaudy psychedelic flourishes.
In 1968, the Stones would go back to the basics, and never wander down these paths again, making this all the more of a fascinating anomaly in the group's discography.
