I've been going thru my massive vinyl record collection these past few weeks and pulling out some LPs that I thought that someone else would want for their collection. I've been collecting records for over 45 years and it's time to pass some of them on to the next generation of collectors.
This week on EBay I am offering up beautiful, rare, stereo copy of "Gloria" by The Shadows of Knight. This is an original 1966 First U.S. Pressing and very hard to find in good condition. This is my original copy, purchased back in the early 70's, that I've taken great care of for many years. See details on Condition below.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This album is a classic. It rocks with a raw energy of a band fresh out of the the teen clubs of Chicago, playing with total abandon and an energy level that seems to explode out of the speakers. 
Back then, they were snotty little Chicago-suburb bad boys, playing in a raw style that was equal parts Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, and The Who.
This album is mostly upbeat Chicago style blues classics, ramped up with a modern late 60s British Rock influence. A hip fusion of urban blues and the raw, muscular guitar-driven sound of the harder British Invasion acts.
Each album side opens with their 2 hits "Gloria" and "Oh Yeah" plus they do wild versions of "I Just Want to Make Love to You," and "I Got My Mojo Working" that rank right up there with any other top band of the time.
This record is the only 'real' Shadows of Knight' recording and captures them at their raw, rocking best.
The great guitarist and rock critic Lenny Kaye thought so too, In 1972, he put together the classic 'Nuggets' album, which included the Shadows of Knight 1966 song "Oh Yeah". A classic!

The Shadows of Knight were an American rock band from the Northwest Chicago suburbs.
The band was formed in 1965 as simply The Shadows, but soon they realized that there was already a well-known band in the UK with the same name.
A friend of the band suggested "The Shadows of Knight" to tie into the British Invasion that was all the rage at the time. The 'Knights' was also the name of the High School football team in Mount Prospect, where the band went to school.
The original lineup included: Jim Sohns (vocals), Warren Rogers (lead guitar), Norm Gotsch (rhythm guitar), Wayne Pursell (bass), and Tom Schiffour (drums).
When they began recording in 1965, the band's self-description was "the Stones, Animals and the Yardbirds took the Chicago blues and gave it an English interpretation. We've taken the English version of the Blues and re-added a Chicago touch," 
Chicago had one of the liveliest garage rock scenes around in the early to mid-'60s, and the Shadows of Knight were one of the most popular and among the toughest acts on the Windy City's teen scene.
After performing in and around Chicago's northwest suburbs in 1964 and 1965, The Shadows of Knight became the house band at The Cellar in Arlington Heights.
A performance in support of the Byrds at Chicago's McCormick Place in early summer 1965 attracted the attention of Dunwich Records, who signed the band shortly thereafter and recorded "Gloria" as their first single.
"Gloria" was released on the 31st of January, 1966 and immediately began to get air-play on local Chicago radio stations. By April, the song had entered the Billboard Hot 100.
The band had slightly altered the song's lyrics, replacing Morrison's original version, making it more acceptable for airplay. Several Chicago radio stations had banned Van Morrison and Them's original version. 
This simple change overcame the censorship and the single reached  No. 1 on Chicago radio and quickly spread to National markets.
For a follow-up to "Gloria", the band chose Bo Diddley's song called "Oh, Yeah", which also cracked the U.S. Top 40.
The Shadows of Knight were 'hot' and quickly joined Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars, touring the United States with The Outsiders, Question Mark And The Mysterians and The Seeds, getting more attention and writing more songs.
The Shadows of Knight then released the Gloria album in the summer of 1966.
Subsequent singles included "Bad Little Woman", and "I'm Gonna Make You Mine", all of which were decent local hits, but didn't make the National charts.
The second album introduced Dave "Hawk" Wolinski, who replaced bassist Warren Rogers and served double duty on bass and keyboards. 
While the band remained a popular live attraction in the Midwest, failure to find a follow-up hit to "Gloria" and "Oh Yeah" led to the band's disintegration. 
Several key members left to form or join other groups. Jerry McGeorge left and later joined a band called H.P. Lovecraft. Soon after, Kelley and Schiffour split too, reappearing the next year with the Joe Kelley Blues Band, while Wolinski wound up with Bangor Flying Circus. 
By mid-1967, the only original member of the Shadows of Knight remaining was vocalist Jim Sohns, who inherited the band's name and fortunately copyrighted it.
In 1968, Dunwich sold the master tapes to its Shadow of Knight recordings to Atlantic Records for one dollar. 
The Jim Sohns led version of the band played together for several years, but never had the success of this first album.
Jim Sohns was determined to keep the act going and moved the band to New York, where they signed with Team Records, a division of Buddah Records. Sohns had hoped to continue to take his band in a hard-rock direction, but the new label had other ideas and turned them into a commercial 'bubble gum' Pop band instead.
In 1969 The Shadows of Knight had a minor hit with a single in their own name called "The Shake", which sold respectably.
While a few more singles emerged after "Shake," the Shadows never scored another hit, and after several years of unglamorous gigs, the band quietly broke up in the mid-'70s. 
Over the years, Sohns fronted varying incarnations of 'The Shadows of Knight' group on the oldies circuit, but they were never the same.
A reunion of the original band took place on August 20th, 2016 at the Q-Bar in Glendale Heights, Illinois. 
Sadly, Jimy Sohns died of complications from a stroke on July 29, 2022, at age 75.

I purchased this copy back in the early 70's, 50 years ago, and have taken great care of it since.
VINYL: The vinyl looks great. Clean and bright. A couple tiny hairlines, but No serious scuffs, palpable scratches, or dings. It looks nice and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.

I tried to show some close-up pictures of the vinyl to show how good it looks. I'm sure you'll be pleased with it.
I haven't messed with it or cleaned it, other than my trusty 'DiscWasher' brush, in 50 years, since Nixon was in ofice. It could use a good deep cleaning to make it even better looking and better sounding than it  already is. 
LABELS: This is pressed with the early Red Dunwich labels. The labels are clean and bright. No marks or damage. The spindle holes are still sharp and clean, suggesting minimal playing and my careful handling over the years.
JACKET: As you can see from my pictures, this still looks very nice for a 50+ year old OG copy. 
The jacket is clean and bright. The corners are sharp, no ring wear, no sean splits or issues. There's some very minor shelf wear but the artwork is bold and bright, the corners are sharp, and the original gloss is still present.
One of the best jackets I've ever seen of this record. A nice survivor.
The back of the Jacket is classic. Lots of hype, lots of Joking around. It has the fan Club info and biographies of the bandmembers. It says you will be 'cursed' if you don't read all the liner notes.
Overall, I'll call the whole record VG++
This record has been sleeved and stored properly for years, and is still quite nice for an original pressing. This copy is all original, and a real gem. I'm sure you'll love it.
