THE WHO
"A LEGAL MATTER" / "INSTANT PARTY"
7" on the original DEMO on BRUNSWICK RECORDS lable 05956 from 1966
This great double-sided gem is a slice of pop history for somewhat political reasons.
Shel Talmy produced both sides, but The WHO had hopped off his controlling lilypad so that Pete Townshend could hold his own in studio decisions, and for what material he was to write - and The Who record.
It was underlined in their next single on Robert Stigwood's <~REACTION~> lable; "Substitute".
The issue though, was the re-recording of 'Instant Party' (aka 'Circles'), which Talmy considered was with his copyright. So, the 'A' side was kind of a not-so-veiled threat, using the band's own track to announce it!
Anyway - two excellent tracks from the earliest WHO recording sessions.
The best rock band in the world, period
The vinyl is in a very respectable VG+ to ++ condition, great shine and a nice player.
There is a sign of a pressure-warp that barely effects the needle and doesn't influence the sound. Basically it's visible under a bright light, but spinning the single there are no serious problems
The lables are VG++ clean and bright, a numerical stamp '250' suggests perhaps the number pressed.
Nice!
