Label/Format: Brunswick (pressed by Decca) original intense black format with deep outer ring ridge. The surfaces are gently textured.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light/ light+, fine and quite faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Put into context for this record, this appears very lighty and carefully played, finding these two landmark and classic record labels on this title will prove very difficult indeed. Highly revealing but little to fault on this wonderful pair. All that and then include impeccable, truly stunning sound quality as well. This groundbreaking mono masterpiece, one of the most important within rock music history, will rarely be seen or heard better.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm (this album was not issued in stereo in the UK, the American ‘stereo’ were only enhanced monos and the one I heard some ago sounded terrible). This is the REAL THING, and no other version made will even get close.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: One of the most groundbreaking rock albums of all-time – this mod-pop rock classic has more than withstood the test-of-time. The title song an anthem for the young generation of the mid-1960s. With most of the songs included written by the brilliant Pete Townshend, this introduced the world to one of the most exciting and consistently brilliant rock bands of all-time. Immediately apparent is the talent of the three musicians – still for me amongst the finest ever on their respective instruments – and there will never be a better drummer for me than the legendary Keith Moon. Roger Daltrey also one of the greatest and expressive vocals as well. Four young men that just oozed talent – sadly two of which are now gone. Issued to rave reviews after early successful singles, it is such a shame the majority of the albums are found in very poor, heavily played, abused and worn-out conditions. Such was their new sound, few copies were purchased by older record buyers of the time. Instead, this appealed to the younger generation of the era, as the title clearly suggested it was meant to. So records were mostly played on the most basic of record players, loaned out, written on, took to parties – few survive in a fit state to play on critically revealing modern equipment. But this one HAS – it appears only lightly played, and then with considerable care. If offers fantastic clear and still little short of pin-sharp sound with no inherent surface noise, pops, clicks or crackle. Just one jolt or drop of a Dansette arm would mean a deep scratch or crator – and another copy written-off. So many people forget, or younger collectors unaware, these machines tracked at massive weights, often using blunted or chipped interior sapphire stylus. The recommended weight was at least 10 grams, but many even added extra weight to play stackable singles that were so often warped. No wonder most are seen trashed. For wanting to experience the real sound of this Who debut classic, with all the details, power and dynamics only the originals really offer, look not further – it’s here. The cover – yes, the back a little aged – but at 50 years old (or very close to), has it not earned the right? – includes the front looking fantastic. Just look at my pictures, the band picture looking up one of the most iconic in the history of UK pop and rock. It will rarely be seen better. And for good measure, the polylined inner sleeve is included. Sometimes as a professional record dealer, it is hard to let certain items go – and this is proving exactly that – but that is the nature of the business sometimes. This album did for the mid-60s youth what the Sex Pistols did for them in the 1970s, and it’s importance to the history of rock is undeniable. Still more, this record will prove beyond difficult to find with better sound and excellent good looks. Bring those mod proto-punk, power pop days back again with this lovely, timeless piece.

Cover Grade and Format: FRONT: EXCELLENT(++) / BACK: NEAR EXCELLENT: are rarely split areas for grading, but this makes more sense on this occasion. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers all the folds, and ends on the back via the spine. The back is smooth, unprotected and matt, thus will always wear less well than the front. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace, includes the polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: This cover is made with the typical Decca style very thin card, so finding this front in this type of condition is a wonderful plus. Taking all into consideration, I do not think my grading for it is too generous. Especially when you see the state most are seen in. There is a little very fine edge hairline creases and traces of darkening on the white corders, but little else really. The Clarifoil laminate retains a lovely shine, freshness and clarity with barely any hint of dulling or rim impression – traces under light viewed up close maybe, but how many will show less these days? Adhesion is total with no lifts, blistering or flaking, and barely a crease to be seen on the graphic area. The very famous young Who picture looks stunning, barely aged with lovely deep colour retained. Thus vital area has no scuffs or press marks and is still flat with no bowing so often associated with thin Clarifoil covers. The odd tiny tip rub or tone spot, but fast approaching 50 – yes, half a century – this front will prove immensely difficult to find better.

Cover Back: The backs on these Decca-style covers are notorious for darkening, and this has to some degree. Moderate around the edges, but lesser-so moving more inside. Some would consider it ‘nicely aged’, and looking perfect for its vintage. For some, a quite gently aged cover is more desirable than a snowy white one, it gives that satisfaction of its genuine age. I have no issues myself with either, but I see the point-of-view of those who want almost as new or one that give clues to it’s mid-60s origin. The most important factor is the lack of damage, and this has none. A faint hint of the thick record’s rim, but no rubbing and few real marks or even creases. All the graphic and type fully intact and present with no writing or sticker issues. A small rub on the bottom left corner tip being pretty much it. So more aged than the magnificent front, and being unprotected, most will be, but still very nice indeed.

Top Edge: Very thin, but incredibly, still very straight, unbowed and smooth with no scuffs, flaking or wear.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same, near exceptional for the storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Apart from tiny rub on the top corner, this is also in superb condition. Solid, straight, and again very thin with any compression very light. The ends being gently tapered in manufacture. Most-all still very smooth with any blemishing visually or to the fingertip test, being tiny and slight. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid, intact and unpeeled laminate. For extra good measure, this is well centered on the very narrow depth.

Corners: A little gentle wear and browning traces, no bashes or significant dinks. Thus fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile mid-1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. The front being is exceptionally attractive. This fragile and historically significant cover should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a Decca mid-60s style polylined inner sleeve that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Some corner creasing – some did this purposed to reduce the risk of the record sliding out. Gently aged only but two immaculate window circles and clear lining. No edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and very arguably better still. This for a near 50-year-old mono record, largely purchased by the youth of the time. Few will even survive half this fine, this is a lovely copy. A very fine visual example that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. Also manufactured to the highest quality on the purest Decca vinyl. Decca being a company that specialised in classical music and were meticulous about the standards of their product and sound. This did not diminish for out-shoot labels or the genre of the music – most-all were of high quality, this Brunswick classic no different. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches, thus this record plays with immense clean sound throughout. Not pristine, but this sets the bar very high, visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A piece of popular music history, its status within all-time greats list totally justified. This copy plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault – and I know what a bold statement that is for a mono record this incredible age. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is immense with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. I noted no pops or clicks either, almost remarkable really. The detail and sheer sonic delivery of the songs is at times breathtaking, none more so than the final song ‘The Ox’ with Entwistle’s crunching bass, that rips through the speaker cloth. No ruinous worn, blunted stylus have been let loose on this, and testament to a record like this, it plays near faultlessly on my ultra revealing LP12 and Naim equipment, the likes such records were not really designed for. But when heard this clean, a thing of real beauty with that warm punchy mono sound filling the room. Few original copies will match or outperform this very early -1B/-1B matrix pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no single channel noise from either speaker when listing in a two channel mode. I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, hearing such a copy is a privilege not to taken for granted. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. A mod masterpiece – the anthem of its G-G-G-G-Generation!

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
