An explosive debut and the hardest mod pop ever. At the time of its release, it also featured the most  powerful guitars and drums ever recorded on a rock record. Pete Townshend's exhilarating chord cracks and dangerous guitar distortions from the beats of "My Generation" and "Out in the Street"; Keith Moon attacks the drums with dexterity and ruthlessness from start to finish. Some influence of "Maximum RandB" remains in both James Brown covers, but much of Townshend's original material incorporated Beatlesque hooks and power chords with anthemic mod lyrics, with "The Good's Gone", "Much Too Much", "La La La Lies," and especially "The Kids Are Okay" are highlights. "A Legal Matter" hints at more ambitious lyrical concerns, and "The Ox" is an instrumental love affair that pushed the boundaries of 1965 amplification with its relentlessly pounding guitars and rolling drums. While the execution is crude at times and the composition isn't as sophisticated as it would soon be, The Who has never exceeded the sheer amount of energy on this record.
