The Who: “Who’s Next”

Inner Sleeve Condition

Traditional Japanese “U” shaped inner sleeve is included, but the record is stored in a new MFSL-type poly-plastic inner sleeve for protection.

Lyric Insert and Obi Condition

No lyric insert was issued with the original gatefold cover release, all of the lyrics are printed in English inside the gatefold cover.  As for the Obi, this album did not come with one when I purchased it years ago from my old Japanese Lp specialist in California.  Originals of this album with the Obi do become available from time to time, but the vinyl is nearly always trashed.  An Obi can always be added later if you have to have one, but the condition of the vinyl is always my first and most important consideration.  If the condition of the vinyl is important to you, this is the copy you want, not to mention the condition of the gatefold cover (please see details for both below).

Gatefold Cover Condition

Cover in beautiful M- condition.  Solid, heavy cardboard cover, with straight corners and a beautiful spine.  No writing, to spots, no seam splits, no yellowing from age, and thanks to proper storage there is not even any edge/shelf wear!  A better condition original 1971 gatefold cover you will not find!

Record Condition

Finally, the most important part… a beautiful, heavyweight Lp with a mirror-like shine.  Not a single mark to the pristine playing surfaces of either side, appears new and unplayed.  Just 3 very short, very light spindle marks right next to the spindle hole on the Side A label, nearly impossible to see unless held at an angle to a bright light.  The side B label has only 1 longish spindle mark near the spindle hole, and that’s it!  A barely played original 1st issue of the Who’s best album. 

But, how does it play???

Since I thought you might ask (and because I couldn’t let it leave my possession without hearing it for myself anyway), I took the opportunity this afternoon to give it a spin.  I am very happy to report that it plays as good as it looks, like a brand new record.   This record merits an easy M- for both appearance and play. 

If you collect top condition 1st issues of the greatest albums in rock history, this is a record that belongs in your collection.

Always stored properly in a heavy outer plastic protective cover, a beautiful example of a very rare 1st issue of the Who’s best album…

AMG Review (5 Stars, of course!)

Much of Who's Next derives from Lifehouse, an ambitious sci-fi rock opera Pete Townshend abandoned after suffering a nervous breakdown, caused in part from working on the sequel to Tommy. There's no discernable theme behind these songs, yet this album is stronger than Tommy, falling just behind Who Sell Out as the finest record the Who ever cut. Townshend developed an infatuation with synthesizers during the recording of the album, and they're all over this album, adding texture where needed and amplifying the force, which is already at a fever pitch. Apart from Live at Leeds, the Who have never sounded as LOUD and unhinged as they do here, yet that's balanced by ballads, both lovely ("The Song Is Over") and scathing ("Behind Blue Eyes"). That's the key to Who's Next — there's anger and sorrow, humor and regret, passion and tumult, all wrapped up in a blistering package where the rage is as affecting as the heartbreak. This is a retreat from the '60s, as Townshend declares the "Song Is Over," scorns the teenage wasteland, and bitterly declares that we "Won't Get Fooled Again." For all the sorrow and heartbreak that runs beneath the surface, this is an invigorating record, not just because Keith Moon runs rampant or because Roger Daltrey has never sung better or because John Entwistle spins out manic basslines that are as captivating as his "My Wife" is funny. This is invigorating because it has all of that, plus Townshend laying his soul bare in ways that are funny, painful, and utterly life-affirming. That is what the Who was about, not the rock operas, and that's why Who's Next is truer than Tommy or the abandoned Lifehouse. Packaging:

You will see from my eBay feedback that I package very securely.  Records are removed from jackets to prevent seam-splits, records and covers are placed inside re-sealable plastic outer protective covers, and "sandwiched" between two pieces of cardboard cut to a size larger than the album cover in order to protect the cover from corner-dings during shipping. 

I have not had any problems with damaged records as a result of my own packaging, but I do recommend Insurance on the more expensive items, I cannot be held responsible for what happens to the package after it leaves my possession.

Shipping to the U.S.

Priority shipping for a package weighing anywhere from 2lbs. to 3lbs. is $5.00 to $9.00 depending on your location.  I do not charge a "Handling" fee, shipping calculations will be made using the USPS website  (http://postcalc.usps.gov/) based on your Zip code.

Payment for U.S. Buyers:

Money Orders are preferred (no checks).  Paypal is accepted.  I do not use eBay's "Check Out" service, so please wait for me to contact you after the auction is complete.  Once I have the winning bidder's address information I will calculate exact shipping using the USPS website (http://postcalc.usps.gov/) and send you a total including (optional but recommended) Insurance and Priority Shipping to your destination.
