ORIGINAL UK TRACK (DELUXE 24080102) FIRST PRESSING (July 1971) OF THE WHO'S CLASSIC,"Who's Next" COMPLETE WITH THE ELUSIVE 'HEADHUNTERS' INNER AND SOUNDING GREAT (ON MY SYSTEM - AT A VERY LOUD VOLUME) WITH A STRONG, DEEP, RICH AND DETAILED SOUND
PRESSED ON QUALITY MID-WEIGHT VINYL WITH THE FIRST ISSUE BLACK/SILVER TRACK LABELS
MATRIX: 2408102 A//1 11 10 (stamped), "MG 12888" (etched) and 2408102 B//2 ∇ 420 11 8 (first issue only etching, on later presses the "MG 12888" was replaced by "BILBO")
THE RECORD IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATT SLEEVE "Printed and made by MacNeill Press Ltd., London, S.E.1" WITH THE CHARACTERISTIC TOP AND BOTTOM 'PINCHED' SPINE - Also in the clouds in the top left corner of the front of the sleeve is the (mistakenly printed and unsuccessfully masked) 'DL 79182' American catalogue number only present on the earliest issued UK sleeves
AND THE SET IS COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL FIRST ISSUE 'HEADHUNTERS' POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVE
Much of Who's Next derives from Lifehouse, an ambitious sci-fi rock opera Pete Townshend abandoned after suffering a nervous breakdown, caused in part from working on the sequel to Tommy.
There's no discernible theme behind these songs, yet this album is stronger than Tommy, falling just behind Who Sell Out as the finest record the Who ever cut.
Townshend developed an infatuation with synthesisers during the recording of the album, and they're all over this album, adding texture where needed and amplifying the force, which is already at a fever pitch.
Apart from Live at Leeds, the Who have never sounded as LOUD and unhinged as they do here, yet that's balanced by ballads, both lovely ("The Song Is Over") and scathing ("Behind Blue Eyes").
That's the key to Who's Next -- there's anger and sorrow, humour and regret, passion and tumult, all wrapped up in a blistering package where the rage is as affecting as the heartbreak.
This is a retreat from the '60s, as Townshend declares the "Song Is Over," scorns the teenage wasteland, and bitterly declares that we "Won't Get Fooled Again."
For all the sorrow and heartbreak that runs beneath the surface, this is an invigorating record, not just because Keith Moon runs rampant or because Roger Daltrey has never sung better or because John Entwistle spins out manic basslines that are as captivating as his "My Wife" is funny.
This is invigorating because it has all of that, plus Townshend laying his soul bare in ways that are funny, painful, and utterly life-affirming

LABELS: The labels are clean and unmarked with only a few light spindle traces (which show readily on these matt black labels) - this copy hasn't been played much at all - EXCELLENT++
VINYL Visual: The surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen. There are some hairlines/scuffs but theses have no real audio consequence. A tiny spot mark on Side Two however, does sound (briefly to minor effect - please see detailed audio assessment below) - EXCELLENT
VINYL Audio: Crystal clear, deep, rich and vibrant sound and on playback at a very loud volume (which is how I always listen to my records prior to listing and it's always a real pleasure to return to this one) there are no scratches, no sticks/jumps, no real surface noise ('Behind Blue Eyes' - always the most problematic track - plays beautifully and cleanly). The aforementioned tiny mark on the end of "Getting In Tune" gives rise to about three dull background pops as it is passed over but these really are barely noticeable and there a few light 'ticks', most notable on the quiet sections of "Won't Get Fooled Agin" (again, in my opinion, very minor). Otherwise, the LP plays to a high standard with great clarity, no discernible groove-wear or distortion and is very critically graded EXCELLENT for audio - sounds great
SLEEVE: The first press cover is also in very nice condition. There is a little rubbing to the spine (the text is still clear) and edges (but nothing major) and the cover is clean and unmarked with none of the common ring wear. Overall, a fine example - EXCELLENT
The original poly-lined HEAD HUNTERS inner sleeve is clean and unmarked with no splits and with the poly lining still firmly attached - EXCELLENT+
