Remarks:

Recorded on November 29, 1957 by Voice of America at Carnegie Hall, New York City. The concert was produced by Kenneth Lee Karpe for the benefit of the Morningside Community Center.

180-gram vinyl release. Gatefold cover with notes.

This LP was mastered from the original 15 ips mono analog tapes by Kevin Hodge at the Master Cutting Room. The LP jacket erroneously has the mastering information for the CD edition of this recording. a live album of the Thelonious Monk Quartet starring John Coltrane, recorded in 1957 but released in 2005.
The recordings are from a November 29, 1957 charity concert on Thanksgiving Jazz produced by Kenneth Lee Karpe for the Morningside Community Center in Harlem. In addition to Monk and Coltrane u. a. Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Sonny Rollins and Chet Baker with Zoot Sims on.
Voice of America's footage documents two sets of Monk's quartet with Coltrane during the concert, an early set of tracks 1-5 and a slightly more relaxed set of tracks 6-9, though not fully preserved.
The tapes were archived at the Library of Congress, where they were kept until their rediscovery in 2005. The recordings have been restored by producer Michael Cuscuna with son Monks, Thelonious Sphere Monk, Jr.
The recordings were highly praised by the critics. Newsweek magazine called the recordings the "musical equivalent to the discovery of Mount Everest," and Amazon called it the "ultimate definition of classic."

The magazine Rolling Stone selected the album in 2013 in his list of the 100 best jazz albums in 8th place.

Through the album the volume of published documents of cooperation between Monk and Coltrane considerably increased. Apart from this album, only one compilation The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings and the recording Discovery is known, which, however, was taken with amateur equipment at a Reunion concert by Monk and Coltrane at the Cafe Five Spot in 1958, probably by Coltrane's first wife..........

Aufnahmen (Mono) 29.

************************************************************************************************
Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall ist ein Live-Album des Thelonious Monk Quartets mit John Coltrane, das 1957 aufgenommen, aber erst 2005 veröffentlicht wurde.
Die Aufnahmen stammen von einem Benefiz-Konzert vom 29. November 1957 beim "Thanksgiving Jazz", welches Kenneth Lee Karpe für das Morningside Community Center in Harlem produzierte. Neben Monk und Coltrane traten u. a.
