THELONIOUS MONK – GENIUS OF MODERN MUSIC VOL. 2 – BLUE NOTE 5009 – EX/EX – 10 INCH LP - LEXINGTON AVE – DG – MONO
There are several sessions on this Blue Note 10 inch LP. The first was on October 15, 1947 featuring Thelonious Monk on piano, accompanied by Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Danny Quebec West on alto, Billy Smith on tenor, Gene Ramey on bass and Art Blakey on drums. This was his first session with Blue Note. They perform: HUMPH and SUBURBAN EYES. The next on was on October 24, 1947 with Gen Ramey on bass and Art Blakey on drums accompanying Monk on NICE WORK. The next session, recorded November 21, 1947 features Monk, accompanied by George Tait on trumpet, Sahib Shihab on alto, Bob Page on Bass and Art Blakey on drums. They play: IN WALKED BUD and WHO KNOWS. Next session was on July 23, 1951 with Sahib Shihab on alto, Milt Jackson on vibes, Al McKibbon on bass and Art Blakey on drums. They perform: FOUR IN ONE; STRAIGHT NO CHASER; ASK ME NOW. The address on the label is “767 LEXINGTON AVE NYC”. There is an “EAR” on both sides in the blank vinyl. The address on the liner notes is “767 LEXINGTON AVE., NEW YORK 21, N.Y.”. This is a deep groove pressing and a MONO recording.
I have graded both the Vinyl and the record jacket as EX for the following reasons. The vinyl is clean of marks, with the exception of a hairline one on Side 2, which does not interfere with play. With the exception of that, it’s clean. There is no sign of wear in or around the spindle hole. There is some discoloration on the label of Side 1. The vinyl still retains its original luster. The record jacket is in excellent condition, but does have a small taped seam on the top right corner. The liner notes are slightly discolored.
