All boxes signed for in quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 156 grams. This a very heavy pressing for this record. The more commonly seen (but still scarce) American version is much lighter and thinner.

Rarity: Quite rare as a UK original. An album that surfaces infrequently, and then more often as a deleted punched or cut American import. A genuine English-pressing with the Shorewood made cover are very elusive. This album sold poorly and was very quickly deleted and ‘lost’ after the Straight label folded and was out-of-print for decades.

Brief Info: Tim Buckley’s masterpiece, but a total commercial failure. Gone are the mellow folk songs of this earlier albums, this almost completely alienated his fans. Now recording for Frank Zappa’s Straight label, Buckley now had poetic licence to freely express himself without constraints of being commercial. Just like Captain Beefheart who recorded his classic ‘Trout Mask Replica’ the previous year, ‘Starsailor’ explodes into jazz and avant garde territory, and few at the time were prepared or willing to follow his journey. It sold very poorly and was quickly deleted, UK copies especially are very hard to find. Not only that, this album is known for its variable pressing quality – this UK-made copy, for most, plays great – there are half-a-dozen clicks on ‘Moulin Rouge’, from a very small mark, but little else overall. Buckley uses his voice as an instrument with sublime effect with scaling extremes. Backing includes the Gardner brothers, former early members of Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. Two more mellow songs are included: the more mainstream jazzy ‘Moulin Rouge’, also probably his best-known song ‘Song to the Siren’, one of the most haunting and beautiful songs ever written in my opinion. It has been covered by other artists over time, and it’s attention has resulted in more interest for this album. This had been out-of-print for years until limited repressings of recent times. However official, legal CD versions remain very rare indeed with only a tiny few ever made, and briefly, that due to legal disputes over copyright. ‘Starsailor’ is now regarded by many as one of the greatest albums of all-time, but clearly it’s not for everyone. Few labels would have given an artist licence to make albums like this, and of course Zappa’s contribution must never be overlooked or forgotten. A brilliant ‘out-there’ album of invention, originality and art, this never fails to get the senses reeling. This copy appears little played, and most plays superbly – never take this for granted – this has avoided the distortion and pressing noises some seem to have. So a rare opportunity to own one of the more difficult UK-made Straight albums, and arguably one of the greatest. It remains one of the most uncompromising and challenging albums ever made by a singer/songwriter – personally, I call it ‘genius’.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single matt format. A far rarer original English printed cover made by Shorewood Packaging Co Ltd with ‘Patents Pending’ text, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A nice looking front for a cover that usually wears badly. This has avoided rubbing apart from corner tips and avoiding fading or sticker issues. A few mild creases show little and this highly elusive UK-made original front will prove hard to find better.

Cover Back: Mild toning here-and-there with traces of a rim mark (look hard). So only gentle clues of age on this predominately white surface. It appears to me this cover was made on a budget with the realisation it had scant chance of selling many copies which proved to be the case. Overall, this side has fared very well again.

Top Edge: Straight with only patchy quite light rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Similar again, the rubbing a fraction heavier.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening little and light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression reasonably light towards the top. The text is unworn and strong as-seen.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with very fine to near excellent shape retained with no heavy knocks, just the odd small tip crease.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this rare UK-made early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white unlined inner that has aged little. Just the seam edge adhesive has naturally darkened with age. Two crisp undamaged window circles and hardly creased. All edges naturally intact. This has the ‘PATENT No. 1,125,555’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed – that more unusually so for this label. A copy with only few plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, mostly light as seen critically under bright light. Just the one penetrating, but very small mark that emits 6 or 7 brief clicks on ‘Moulin Rouge’ as stated further up – that the only blemish of any real note on this complex and challenging album. Visually still a fine record with most of any other visual blemishes within the pressing and ignored, this very rare UK copy should please many collectors as long as the brief aforementioned clicks are not an issue.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant quite ‘out-there’ album plays mostly even above it’s high visual grading with little else to fault bar those brief clicks. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this generally a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises or distortion. This album is known to be variable in pressing quality and often invisible, but audible pressing flaws ruin it, but this not the case for this UK copy. Minus the tiny mark on ‘Moulin Rouge’, this would be one of the finest copies I have seen or heard and comes close to matching my own personal copy. Few available examples from wherever they were made will outperform this rare English original. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played quite lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. The small mark, is more like a chip and possibly a tiny pressing flaw? Whatever, little else spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this brilliant creatve album. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended if those brief clicks are not a problem. So not for purists who only want perfection at any cost, but few copies will ever be that as I know from experience.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new Nessie Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
