"Back in the 70's, a new awareness emerged in New Orleans.  Many local residents began to realize that they lived in the midst of a unique regional culture.  One result of this appreciative consciousness was  the formation of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, while another was the opening of a nightclub called Tipitina's.
The club was named for a song by the blues-rhumba piano genius Professor Longhair.  Tipitina's became his home base, and a general bastion of New Orleans music, featuring other local legends like James Booker, "Tuts" Washington, and Chief Jolly of the Wild Tchoupitoulas, and nurturing such then-aspiring bands as the Neville Brothers and the Radiators.
Today Tipitina's reigns as one of New Orleans' top nightclubs, booking world-renowned talent while also giving local up-and comers the chance to build up a following.  The ten fine performances here reflect a city that's bursting at the seams with talent.
Tipitina's In Person comes out swinging with the big, rich voice of Marva Wright.  This powerful ex-gospel singer is now starting to tour both the U.S. and Europe.  Her tight band is augmented by guitarist John Mooney, one of modern blues' most passionate young players.
Wright  is followed by a solo segment from pianist and guitarist Jon Cleary.  Originally from London, Cleary has quickly penetrated New Orleans' inner circle of R&B players, working with the likes of Snooks Eaglin and this album's next artist, blues guitar ace Walter "Wolfman" Washington.  Thanks to constant touring and two albums on Rounder, Washington is emerging as one of New Orleans R&B's most important and funky emissaries.
Hot on the Wolfman's tracks come the Backsliders, whose swinging jump-blues sound features Ben Maygarden on vocals and harmonica.  This fine band has just released an album on the Carryon label.  Side One ends on a high-energy note with the Rebirth Jass Band - one of the many young brass bands to inject the century-old New Orleans parade-jazz tradition with exciting new innovations.  Look for Rebirth's albums on both Arhoolie and Rounder.
The flip side opens with the blistering guitar work of Troy Turner - the latest talent to emerge from Baton Rouge.  Over the years Louisiana's capital has also spawned such other blues greats as Buddy Guy and Slim Harpo.  Troy's debut album will appear on Kingsnake Records.  Then there's the strikingly original "Psychedelic hootenanny" music of Shot Down In Equador, Jr.  Through their local roots remain apparent in the second-line influenced drumming of Ray Burns, this individualistic group underscores the diverse creativity of the local scene surrounding Tipitina's.
The next three groups also illustrate this contemporary cutting edge.  The Blue Runners, from Lafayette, Louisiana, spice up their distinctive rockabilly sound through the use of the zydeco percussion instrument called the frottoir, or rub-board.  The hard-hitting rock and blues of Johnny J. and the Hitmen has made them a major attraction in Scandinavia.  Look for their album on the Great Southern label.  Dash Rip Rock, close out the album with an explicit tale of instrumental lust; check them out on Mammoth Records.
