A year after the release, in 1973,  of the "GP" Lp by Gram Parsons, he repeated the winning formula with another fine album titled "Grieveous Angel" that is every bit its equal, possibly better. The magnificent opener, Return Of The Grievous Angel, has Emmylou Harris mixed a little higher than usual as if somebody was thinking of marketing Parsons and Harris along the lines of a Jones/Wynette country duo. Parson's fragile voice is perfectly complemented by the more assured (and countryfied) Harris, highlighted all the more on the emotionally charged Hearts On Fire. However, Brass Buttons is another one of those sublime ballads that Parsons sings alone with a relaxed confidence made possible by the simplest of melodies and its low register. The words, as with many a Parson's original, are rather oblique but wonderfully poetic.
$1.000 Wedding, on the other hand, is straighforward story-telling, at times ridiculous enough to laugh at and yet deadly serious and genuinely moving. It's not at all obvious how Parsons manages to do what he does, he seems to stumble along yet never puts a foot wrong. Unless, that is, you find the dubbed audience effects on the next two numbers distracting, they were certainly unnecessary. Cash On The Barrelhead is a honky-tonk stomper and Hickory Wind a slow, sentimental, homesick blues in 3/4, they couldn't be more different but are combined here as an out-take from a fake live performance. In fact, Hickory Wind is one of Parson's finest.
Love Hurts features an ambitious vocal from Parsons, closely harmonised by Harris. In the mix they start out left and right respectively but move together by the end of the song...curious. The rock-a-billy Ooh Las Vegas has some blissful guitar picking and a terrifically catchy chorus, its hilarious lyric sounds autobiographical.
The final song is co-written by the two singers, the verses, once again unfathomably personal, are surely Parson's, though the choruses perhaps not. The slightly solemn music is well suited for what was, in effect, Parson's swan song.
It's difficult to judge the true value of Parson's solo albums although they're certainly artistically successful and have stood the test of time. Parsons clearly had the ambition to do something unique in country music, retaining the deepest respect for its form and yet freeing it from its conservative trappings. On one level he succeeded in this earlier in his career but on these albums his vision and the tradition lie side by side, perhaps the only thing that seperates them are his voice and his songs. He was not a country singer and his songs were not always country but he had the opportunity to indulge his passion for the music he grew up with and couldn't accept the alienation from it his generation were feeling. So he offered up his solution with two bold and beautiful statements, cheeky yet respectful, open and honest, above all, quite brilliant.
