Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and traceable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Label/Format: Regal Zonophone – with matt, gently textured surfaces. Side two include the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes, both letters are totally unworn, so-much-so, the ‘T’ is not easily seen on the red ink.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, still fresh and attractive. Spindle marks on side one are very few and mostly light. Side two has more and they do show a little. The record plays superbly with hardly anything unwanted, this on a more perilous mono copy. My play-grade was a joy and to date, this is one of the finest sounding copies in mono of this elusive debut album I have heard to date.

Brief Info: The first Tyrannosaurus Rex album after Marc Bolan had left John’s Children. All very acoustic and beautifully recorded. The early ‘T Rex’ were very different to the Glam-rock era with a hippy-style psychedelic folk sound. Quite surprisingly, this album sold fairly well as it is hardly that commercial, it peaked at No 15 in the UK but was not even issued in the United States until 1972. The cover artwork is simply gorgeous. The sublime artwork by George Underwood, he also did the equally futuristic sci-fi back cover for Bowie’s original self-titled second album, later retitled, ‘Space Oddity’. This a very fine example and the sound was very impressive indeed with little unwanted. Being acoustic and with some quiet songs that even includes reading by John Peel of a children’s piece written by Boland. It is a challenging one to find that will play cleanly and without noise, clicks or distortion. Being a mono copy, most were purchased to be played on those record players, and few will survive in type of condition. My play-grade was a joy and the sound very impressive and clean. The cover is very attractive, the graphic stunning, but the laminate does have some spot and possible scuff marks near the top – being honest, I am not sure if these are small manufacture flaws or storage issues, it’s really hard to say for sure. But these surface marks are only mostly seen under light, with normal full on viewing, they show little. And such is the graphic’s complexity, they are quite well masked in the design anyway. These marks apart, and a couple of quite light surface crease near the edges, there is not a great deal else to fault. Still a splendid looking cover and the very surreal, psychedelic image graphic still a genuine pleasure to view – it has to be one of the best 1960s cover graphic ever? The double-sided ‘T. Rex’ insert sheet remains in nigh-on mint condition, that now quite elusive. So a very fine complete mono original that include the ultra early ‘R’ stamper codes – the second in the sequence following ‘G’. It should please many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a little difficult to grade with the laminate marks towards the top – minus these, this lovely cover has little else of great note to fault. A single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the foldss and ends on the back via three large external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents Pending’ text. Included is the original inner sleeve and the double-sided lyric insert sheet.

Lamination & Front: One of the greatest 1960s album cover fronts with stunning artwork by George Underwood. Here seen somewhere near maximum advantage under shiny, clear and still quite fresh laminate that has no lifting and any dulling minimal and light. Seen more under light, there are numerous small ‘dot’ marks with a small few scuffs. Hard really to explain these with any certainty – possibly in manufacture, or simply obtained from handling or accident. As stated, viewed normally full on, these hardly show, but do so under angled light, as do some wispy surface marks. But these marks are somewhat ‘lost’ over the complex and superb artwork graphic. The same for most of the few creases, with only a couple even close to moderate, the rest fine and faint. So, with the laminate spotting and marks towards the top, it is not for purists of cover perfectionists, but with its scarcity, it will please many collectors.

Cover Back: Apart from a little patchy and light handling traces/mild grubbiness, this back has little else to fault. No rubbing, creasing or ring wear, the main panel is impressive for a 50-year-old cover. The three flipbacks are superb with barely anything to fault at all. Clean, solid with minimal trace of end burring and no laminate end grime, even the laminate on these retains excellent shine and minimal creasing.

Top Edge: Thin, but still straight with very smooth laminate that has no chipping, peeling or wear.

Bottom Edge: Practically the same again, a fraction less straight being critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge, this guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Very solid, quite straight with any compression light, the ends are tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this superbly centred as-seen.

Corners: Hardly any tip rubbing with excellent or better shape retained. No knocks, any hints of tip creasing tiny and light.

Cover Summary: As stated, when viewed normally full-on, this famous and classic cover looks lovely, but under light those laminate spots and marks are seen. However the graphic still looks lovely and there is not a great deal else to fault. It still defies its great age and will please many collectors, but not for cover purists or perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain solid unlined white inner that has only lightly aged with light discolouration of the paper, this mainly near the edge seam adhesive areas that rarely escape. Hardly creased with no edge splits or repairs. This includes the ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: PRACTICALLY MINT: this appears barely even handled and reminds of new. Made with fairly thick card and side one features a small inset of John Peel. He was a great fan of the early ‘T. Rex’ and promoted their work extensively, he also features on the album, reading a piece for children written by Boland towards the end. This is immaculate, ultra clean, fresh with no creasing and very sharp edges. This scarce insert is so often missing and this a fantastic example that is guaranteed original. This is seldom seen looking this nice.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. On evidence of the playing surfaces and sound quality, this has been played little with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super mono record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quite rare mono album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Acoustic mono albums are amongst the most challenging to find in high-quality playing conditions and few survive half-a-century worthy of a second listen. Well this one has more than just survived, it was a pure pleasure to play-grade, and to date, the very best mono copy I have heard. Few available copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a stereo system. I am certain it has been played only lightly, even with a several spindle marks on side one – some owners simply used the label to locate the hole and are never definitive for number of plays. For sure, it has been played with due care and suffered no mistreatments at all. The cover does have light issues, but the record hardly any at all and nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading it. One that will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
