A true Beatles holy grail—possibly the rarest commercially issued U.S. picture sleeve for a Beatles 45. This is the legendary misassigned sleeve for Can’t Buy Me Love, using the same artwork as the U.S. issue of I Want to Hold Your Hand—a rushed, regionally limited variant that was immediately withdrawn after being deemed unsuitable by Capitol.
In early 1964, Beatlemania was exploding across the United States. Capitol Records, scrambling to meet unprecedented demand, was in a constant state of catch-up with its Beatles releases. When Can’t Buy Me Love was rushed to press for release in March 1964, there was no time to produce new sleeve artwork.
Instead, Capitol temporarily re-used the photo sleeve from I Want to Hold Your Hand, with the same design, same layout, and same front image, pairing it with the new Can’t Buy Me Love single.
This wasn’t a test pressing or a promo mock-up—it was an official, but hyper-limited regional production. Reportedly distributed only in certain U.S. territories for a very brief window—likely the Midwest and West Coast—this sleeve was immediately discontinued once proper artwork arrived.
That momentary gap in production gave rise to one of the most elusive and hotly debated sleeves in Beatles U.S. collecting circles.
This copy includes the original U.S. Capitol 45rpm disc of Can’t Buy Me Love, correctly matched with the erroneous picture sleeve. Having the correct record with the correct sleeve is essential—many known examples have mismatches, making this all the more significant.
