The Roland Rennie Collection

Coming up for the foreseeable future, is a record collection that is quite unique. It is the personal collection of the late great Mr. Roland Rennie who was the managing director at Polydor records in the UK during the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. There are some unique records, including 7 inch singles and LP's, along with Acetates, Demo's/Promo's and Factory sample records. Most are very early issues, if not the first to be produced. All of the main Polydor artists are present, including international and UK labels connected to Polydor.

In 1950, a young man named Roland Rennie joined EMI records in Hayes, Middlesex, UK. Roland quickly grew with the company and saw its success mushroom manyfold during the late 1950's and early 1960's.

During his 12 years at EMI, he held many positions and eventually became the right hand man to EMI managing director, L.G. Wood in 1959, and was closely involved with major affiliation switches by major American firms. He oversaw the changes from British Decca to EMI and of Liberty and United records. His experience would put him in the top 6 of most knowledgeable executives in the industry at that time.

In 1962, Roland was a member of the team reponsible for the conception of the 'Stateside' label, which became the outlet in the UK and many other countries for: Scepter, Vee Jay, Diamond, Swan, Laurie; and a dozen other U.S. ensigns.

In addition, under instruction from Sir George Martin, Roland was also the person responsible for The Beatles' entrance onto the American stage, and was directly involved in negotations for them to appear on the Ed Sullivan show for the first time.

In 1965, he left EMI to take up the position of managing director at Polydor records in the UK, and directly oversaw the signings to the label of: The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Bee Gees, Sonny & Cher, Wilson Pickett, Ben E King, Otis Redding, The Drifters, Joe Tex, Patti and her Belles, Don Covay, Barbara Lewis and Soloman Burke, to name but a few.

On offer today, The Beatles 1963 UK mono 12" Vinyl Lp titled "Please Please Me" on the black and yellow Parlophone label with a Factory Sample - Not For Sale sticker on side 2.

Matrix side 1: XEX 421-1N (1 RH)
Matrix side 2: XEX 422-1N (12 RP)

Side 1 condition:

The surface and shine of the vinyl is good+ but with quite a few marks and rubs on the surface.
There is some interference with playback on track 1 and track 2. There is a stick and a jump on track 1 and a jump on track 2. There is also background noise throughout, especially through quieter sections, but the rest of the side plays through without sticks or jumps.

The black and yellow Parlophone label with "Sold in the UK....." text and 'KT' tax code is in very good plus condition with light wear around the centre hole.
Generally, the label is pleasing to the eye and the printed text boldly stands out with no fading present.

Side 2 condition:

Side 2 plays through nicely with some background noise throughout but no sticks or jumps.

The good plus shine and surface of the vinyl on side 2 is equal to that as described on side 1. There are quite a few marks and lines but no deep scratches.

The Parlophone label on side 2 with a Factory Sample - Not For Sale sticker and "Sold in the UK...." is in very good plus condition. Again, there is a little discolouration and light wear around the centre hole but the text remains visually bold with no obvious fading.

The Emitex inner sleeve is in excellent plus condition with no fading, no tears, no seam splits, light creasing and very little discolouration.

The E. J. Day Ltd. outer sleeve, (who's reference appears in the bottom right hand corner of the rear panel) is in fair condition with tape to some margins, where they have obviously lifted previously. There is also obvious signs of wear around the perimeter.

The rear panel shows quite a bit of wear and discolouration but the print remains very good.
