The Beatles - Rubber Soul - ‘LOUD’ Cut.

Original 1965 Yellow & Black Parlophone Label.

A UK first press album in 100% original condition,  featuring the withdrawn ‘LOUD’ cut issue,  with the vinyl matrix of   1 / 1.  The record comes with the more unusual sleeve, printed by  ‘E J Day’.

When ‘Rubber Soul’ was first released the production sound on the 1/1  matrix record was somewhat different to the final later agreed Mono mix. The storey apparently goes that The Beatles record Producer George Martin was not happy with the 1/1 mix, but his decision did not come in time for these now very collectable 1 / 1 matrix versions to become available to the public.  Some say that the 1 / 1 matrix were ONLY available for sale for ONE DAY !,  other stories say it was 2 weeks until the 1 / 1 matrix was officially withdrawn from the public market.

These early mixes only ever appeared in Mono and are distinguished by the vinyl’s matrix -  XEX 579-1 / XEX 580-1.

EMI sound Engineers felt that these early presses were ‘unbalanced’ with unclear  bass and vocal sounds. The decision was made to halt production whilst the ‘mother plates’ were re-cut.  Interesting to note, EMI stated at the time “ this record was withdrawn for a reason ” !

Today the sound is a matter of personal taste, making a fascinating piece of Beatle recording history.

Certainly most of these ‘Loud Cuts’ (80%) came with a ‘ Garrod and Lofthouse’ printed sleeve, this record has a premium as it features the more unusual sleeve printed by E J Day.

CONDITION:

MAIN SLEEVE:  is in very good+ condition, it is clean and strong, the front is laminated.  The two opening edges are in very good+ condition,  the spine is excellent and the text is 100% readable.  The rear of the sleeve has the tri flipbacks design.  The rear is unlaminated and is very clean and white for its age.  The sleeve is  the more unusual design as it is printed by E J Day.  There is  NO Biro pen damage or staining.

INNER SLEEVE: is in very good+ condition, it is the original tissue paper lined Emitex sleeve,  it is very white in colour and very clean, with NO biro writing or staining or edge wear.   

VINYL: is in very good+ condition and features the original thick, heavy vinyl.  The matrix nos. are - XEX 579-1 and XEX 580-1 making it the very first pressing, ‘LOUD’ cut.  The Mother/Stampers are:  ‘ 3  - GDP’  and  ‘2  – HD’.  The audio is very good, when on the turntable the vinyl lies flat and plays with NO skips or jumps. 

THE LABELS:  are in very good+ condition, there is a ‘KT’ embossed onto side  One.   Someone initials  have been written in blue Biro on either side of the label,  within the yellow   ‘£’  circle, this is quite  discrete and doesn’t really notice.

I am using the official grading system from Record Collector Magazine.

Grading System

The seven standard condition categories and a description of what each one means are listed below:

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.

+  or  – :  indicates a grading in between categories.
