Description

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Parlophone, PMC 7027, June 01,1967, mono. Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. laminated flipback gatefold inside flipback sleeve with mono PMC 7027 number on back side.

First pressing. June 01,1967. Black label with yellow logo and silver print. “The Gramophone Co. Ltd.” printed at the start perimeter print and “Sold in U.K. subject…” text.  Matrix numbers: Side 1: XEX 637-1; Side 2: XEX 638-1.

This is the Fourth Proof sleeve which represents the earliest possible pressing of the Sgt Pepper cover. The Fourth Proof was the final version of the various prototypes that were explored by the Beatles when the cover was being designed. The cover & text were approved by the Beatles and an initial small test run was undertaken to make sure everything looked OK. This small test run is characterised by the inverted Fourth Proof text in the top right hand corner of the inner gatefold – just above George Harrison’s head. This is therefore the earliest possible prototype (test pressing) cover. Same fold-back has printed text AR D1321 which was probably the reference number for the prototype text that was used.

The sleeve is in excellent condition for its age. Please see photo’s for greater detail. There are one or two marks as one would expect of a record that is approaching 50 years old. There is slight crushing effect on the spine (again see picture for greater detail) but the text is still clearly visible.

The cream / pink / red inner jacket is in very good condition and is original.

The Sgt Pepper Cut Outs insert is in excellent condition and has little sign of wear and tear, suggesting it has rarely been removed from the gatefold.

The record itself is in very, very good condition with light surface scratch marks, a nice clean label with few spindle marks. Rather than try and grade the vinyl itself, there are pictures of both sides of the record and a close up of the label both sides for you to make your own judgement.

Good luck with your bidding. Any questions, please feel free to ask.
